Book Description

December 12, 1988
'Einstein was not only the ablest man of science of his generation, he was also a wise man, which is something different. If statesmen had listened to him, the course of human events would have been less disastrous than it has been.

This verdict, from the Preface by Bertrand Russell, sums up the importance of this first collection of Albert Einstein's writing on war, peace, and the atom bomb. In this volume, thanks to the Estate of Albert Einstein's writings on war, peace, and the atom bomb. In this volume, thanks to the Estate of Albert Einstein, the complete story is told of how one of the greatest minds of modern times worked from 1914 to 1955 on the problem of peace. It is a fascinating record of a man's courage, his sincerity, and his concern for those who survive him.

This book is also a history of the peace movement in modern times. Here are letters to and from some of the most famous men of his generation, including between Einstein and Freud on aggression and war, and to President Roosevelt reporting the theoretical possibility of nuclear fission. It is the living record of more than 40 years of Einstein's intriguing struggle to mobilize forces all over the world for the abolition of war and the creation of a supranational organization to solve conflicts among nations.

This review is from: Einstein on Peace P (Hardcover)
Einstein is famous for his monumental work on special and general relativity, but is not as well-known for his valiant efforts in the interest of world peace and good will among men. The editor hopes that this book will inspire us to do our own share for the cause of world peace. This is an excellent book, and provides a glimpse into the second thing that was close to Einstein's heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Einstein on Peace, January 3, 2012

This review is from: Einstein on Peace (Hardcover)
Einstein on Peace is one of the best and most important books I ever read. It is a thematic biography of one of the greatest humans and great humanitarians in all of history. One would benefit from reading other biographies and collections of Einstein, and Einstein's writings such as Ideas and Opinions - and my favorite book on his theories is Lincoln Barnett's 'Universe and Dr. Einstein' written for the general reader over 60 years ago. Einstein's struggles with war and peace and his role - both through his theories [e.g. basis for nuclear weapons] and actions [one of the great pacifists of the 20th century] are on the level of the greatest Greek tragedies. As Russell said in his introduction 50 years ago, and still accurate today - if people and leaders would listen to Einstein's advice, our world could hope for not only a much less apocolyptic future, but perhaps ...peace.
