Einstein is famous for his monumental work on special and general relativity, but is not as well-known for his valiant efforts in the interest of world peace and good will among men. The editor hopes that this book will inspire us to do our own share for the cause of world peace. This is an excellent book, and provides a glimpse into the second thing that was close to Einstein's heart.

Einstein on Peace is one of the best and most important books I ever read. It is a thematic biography of one of the greatest humans and great humanitarians in all of history. One would benefit from reading other biographies and collections of Einstein, and Einstein's writings such as Ideas and Opinions - and my favorite book on his theories is Lincoln Barnett's 'Universe and Dr. Einstein' written for the general reader over 60 years ago. Einstein's struggles with war and peace and his role - both through his theories [e.g. basis for nuclear weapons] and actions [one of the great pacifists of the 20th century] are on the level of the greatest Greek tragedies. As Russell said in his introduction 50 years ago, and still accurate today - if people and leaders would listen to Einstein's advice, our world could hope for not only a much less apocolyptic future, but perhaps ...peace.

This is more a companion than a book. It is a source of counsel, solace, and hope. With history always repeating as it seems, this book unfortunately, is timeless and is likely to remain topical for a while to come. So, I expect it will still be on my bedside when I die. The humanness that emanate from the conversations and thoughts made accessible in this book can't but be reassuring when life seems to be heading in the opposite direction, towards modes of existence with only the barest of humanity allowed into them where unavoidable. Besides the validation and solace such reassurance provides, Einstein's reflections on worldly matters shine with the same brilliance as his explications of some of most subtle and sublime matters of the world. The essence of that brilliance is found in the degrees of inherent simplicity and elegance he unmasks in the word as a result, enough for even the most ordinary of minds to see. When it comes to matters of war and peace, pain and suffering, life and death, human dignity, justice, etc., the notions of simplicity and elegance do not naturally come to mind. Yet here again, Einstein's unassuming brilliance proves just as effective in highlighting avenues to simple and elegant solutions, if we care enough to embrace the corresponding and requisite perspective on offers here for the rest of us.
