Gr 4-8-A look at the life of the popular skater before and after the sudden death of her pairs partner and husband, Sergei Grinkov. After discussing her subject's childhood and detailing the couple's relationship and career, Shea focuses on how Gordeeva has dealt with her grief. Her story offers readers hope that although tragic things happen, life goes on. Skating terminology used in the text is explained in the glossary. The black-and-white photographs depict both happy and sad times in the skaters' lives. Although much of the same information can be found in Gordeeva's book, A Letter to Daria (Little, Brown, 1998) this is still a good read for sports lovers.-Barb Lawler, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA

Right now, I'm celebrating the release of my "lucky" 13th book, NOAH WEBSTER: WEAVER OF WORDS. I'm also in press (editing) my first YA novel, ABE IN ARMS, about a former boy soldier from Liberia having a hard time adjusting to high school in the US. I've co-written a nonfiction picture book with Iris VanRynbach called THE TAXING CASE OF THE COWS: A TRUE STORY ABOUT SUFFRAGE. We're thrilled that Caldecott winner, Emily Arnold McCully, is illustrating it! It should be out Fall 2010 or Spring 2011.

I'm working on writing 2 projects: SNAKE BOY, SISTER SPY, a YA novel based on the teen exploits of my aunt and uncle in the French Resistance during WWII; also, I'm working with UCONN marine biologists on a series called AQUANAUTS: TEEN HEROES OF THE SEAS.

I mostly enjoyed this book for the pictures only. I was kind ofdisappointed when I bought it because mostly, the writer parrots whatKatia wrote in My Sergei and said in the video documentary. Nothing new. The pictures are never seen before but if you want to know about Katia Gordeeva, buy My Sergei.

This book had many b&w photos of Gordeeva and Grinkov that I had not seen before. The book is very nice for older children/pre-teens: pretty easy reading, and has basic facts about Katia's life in a nice format. Everyone else: If you want to learn about Katia, buy My Sergei (definate 5 stars)instead.
