Book only gives overview type information not really needed for a developer. Just use the online pdf files and API.

A Reference, not a Guide,

As one other reviewer has already stated, by itself this book is very inadequate for a working developer to directly train from in order to build significant Ektron sites. The book leverages heavily an Ektron starter site, OnTrek, that is extremely difficult to obtain from the company. Typically only those working for an Ektron partner can obtain it. Thus the typical reader is forced to go without any computer-based tutorials from screen shot picture to screen shot picture with only a minimal explanation of the programming mechanics needed. And you will see no development workflow schematics in this "guide" that explains how a developer actually uses the architecture of this CMS as it sits within a web site. A mediocre presentation with too much expository blather and too little concrete development examples.

Good Start to Finish CMS Book,
This review is from: Ektron Developer's Guide: Building an Ektron Powered Website (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
This is a good book that is applicable to developers, of course... it's the "Developers Guide"... but it's also good for trainers, power users, marketing/communications employees... all across the organization. It talks about the WHY as well as the WHAT and HOW; so, there are sections like "the importance of social networking" and "connecting to clients." Buy a few, because once people figure that out, they'll have trouble sharing.Cons? You'll end up tagging a lot of pages because the index is a bit short, and the code samples are only in C# (so, VB folks will have to figure out how some of them map to C# themselves). Maybe someone should re-write all the samples in VB and post them somewhere? (hint, hint) Overall, it's a good start to finish cms book that takes you seamlessly from overview to specifics with something for everyone in-between. Thanks for writing this guys!

This is a very in-depth approach to the Ektron CMS400 system. I'm not sure I can fully deploy based on this book, but it gives me 90% of what I need. The rest I will get from the great online forum and developers' site at the Ektron.com site.Ektron Developer's Guide: Building an Ektron Powered Website (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) |
