"El Barrio" is an award-wining social documentary directed by Melissa Eidson that focuses on Mexico City's "hot" centric zone as seen through the eyes of the people who live there. Using a hand-held Mini DV camera, this gritty documentary captures life in the hood and contains illuminating and entertaining interviews ... from over 20 likable characters, who offer tips about survival and recount stories about life on the run. In a recent interview for Show Business Weekly, Eidson said "I made "El Barrio" because I wanted to take a walk through one of Mexico City's most infamous neighborhoods, TEPITO, a place where the police don't even go. In an environment known to be dangerous and chaotic, we found people who live there by ingenuity, faith, and sheer determination." Eidson has also had several films at the Cannes Film festival in recent years, including El Barrio at the Short Film Corner of the market at Cannes 2006. She also acted in the movie "Battle in Heaven" that was in the Official Selection in competition at Cannes 2005. She recently scooped up the Best International Documentary Award for El Barrio at the LA portion of the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival (NYIIFVF) and the Founder's Choice Award for best feature documentary at NYIIFVF in New York City November of 2006. El Barrio was also selected for the Berlin Film festival which was screened with a group of films from Latin America. No Son Invisibles: Maya Women and Microfinance has a current running time of 51 minutes, 23 seconds.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but amateurish, February 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: El Barrio (Amazon Instant Video)
"El Barrio" is a documentary of people who live and work in the Centro Historico, the center of Mexico City and a district where the traditional Mexican street life still thrives.

Although the producer chose an interesting subject for her documentary, the movie is marred by nonprofessional filming and editing. Too much of the film consists of someone holding a camcorder while walking through the street and randomly pointing the camera at things -- the effect is a bouncy picture that looks like an amateur home video, and it's impossible to make out any details. Definitely not what you would expect when paying for a movie rental! The camera calms down during the interview sections, but some of the interviews are cut too long and we end up with 10 minutes of rambling.

Although some of the subjects interviewed are fascinating and will bring a smile to anyone who enjoys meeting unusual people, I am unable to recommend this film for anyone who doesn't have a particular interest in Mexico City.
