I also purchased the soundtrack for the movie "El Cantante" and was sorely disappointed. The new musical arrangements by Sergio George for this movie have gutted the original classic salsa sound. There is barely a remnant of the cencerro (cowbell) and the clave (the two sticks), two percussion instruments essential to any salsa brava, as all of Hector's songs were.

For those of you getting to know Hector Lavoe, this is a great starter album. The move "El Cantante" has renewed an interest in the original pioneers of salsa like Lavoe, and this album compliments the movie very well. Sure, you can get Marc Anthony's rendition of the genius and his songs, but you should always start out with the original.

Those who like Hector Lavoe will enjoy this cd. Although the quality is not excellent (I heard the original LP in one of my neighbor's sound system and liked the sound and was amazed by the coda of Periodico de Ayer, an almost classical part at the end of the song with violins which lamentably is not included in this CD.)
I also like Dia de Suerte. How the chorus begins at "destiempo"... had not noticed it? uhmm.

Great music... amazing lyrics..Hector's voice is soothing yet exhilarating....No one compares to him. I truly enjoy every song.

I absolutely love this CD. I am a black female and I don't understand everything that he is saying, but Levoe is so talented that his passion and diction got me mesmerized. I can actually feel the words. PLEASE EVERYONE GET THIS RECORD...IT IS WELL WORTH IT.

This album has Héctor Lavoe's best songs and some of salsa's greatest songs period! If you love salsa you have to own this CD. Some of my favorites: "Mi gente", "Aguanile", and "Che Che Colé". I grew up with my dad playing his "Comedia" album on Sundays. Héctor Lavoe's voice is one of a kind. I saw the movie starring Marc Anthony as Héctor and Jennifer López as his wife. Liked the movie a lot and all the songs from the movie are on this album done by the maestro himself -- no covers by Marc Anthony. ¡Cómpralo! ¡No se lo va a arrepentir!

Hector is in fine form on this. I highly recommend this as it is a vital part of salsa music creation!

I workout to El Cantante - The Original. It's like nonstop Great music to exercise to. Hector Laveo is still the best. I saw Marc Anthony's movie, El Cantante but, I brought Hectors Original CD. It's my favorite CD. I blast the CD in my Escalade, and everybody looking at me and singing along with me. I'm a black guy from the Bronx, living in Manhattan. I don't know a lot of Spanish, but I love hectors music. He is still the Greatest.

EVERY cut is FABULOUS....great dancing and exercise music.....as a young woman I danced to the FANIA All Stars back in the day and was excited to see the movie and now once again dance to the music.

Great CD! Never skip a song! The best of the best! All these songs will be hits even if they came out for the very first time in 2008!
