Aterciopelados - "Rio"

Biography

Colombian music icons Aterciopelados aggressively build upon the creative momentum of their last album ‘Oye’ with their latest critically-acclaimed new work, ‘Rio.’ While Latin Grammy-winning ‘Oye’ helped re-establish the band, ‘Rio’ finds Aterciopelados at a creative peak with more politically and socially-charged lyrics than ever before. ‘Rio’ is a true call to action – to their native Colombia,… Read more in Amazon's Aterciopelados Store

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to find debut release may be hard to hear, July 11, 2001

This review is from: Con El Corazon En La Mano (Audio CD)
If you have fallen in love with the music of Aterciopelados from any of their other albums, "Con El Corazon en La Mano" may be hard to listen to. This is because it is their first release and as a consequence, they still sound quite young and overall it sounds under-produced. The next album, "El Dorado" is still a bit raw but has more production. The first album has much more of a garage band feel. Take for instance the classic track, "Mujer Gala". It is a bonus track on the second album and if you are used to hearing that version or how the band plays it live then you will probably be disappointed with the version on "Con El Corazon en La Mano". However, if you have seen Aterciopelados live when they perform "La Cuchilla", you may have noticed that it also gets the audience moving. The power is just as strong on this album because it is a fast, driving song where high production is not needed. There are other memorable moments on this album, including "La Gomela", or you may prefer the single, "Sortilego". This debut release has the founding members Andrea and Hector paired with a bassist and drummer who are not on the subsequent releases. I find that the guitarist on this album is still learning and at the time of recording, had not yet found his style, which compromises the songs as a whole. As much as it may seem that I am trying to put off a potential purchaser, I am only trying to beware you of the difference between this album and the latter ones. I highly recommend that you purchase this album ASAP since it is *very* hard to find. I believe that Aterciopelados recent popularity in the USA has made this album once more available for purchase, but still hard to find, so pick up a copy while you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars ¡Qué chévere!, September 18, 2002

I didn't even realize this CD existed. I've loved Aterciopelados for years, and I always favored the nasty-punky-unpredictable EL DORADO over their more professional recent output. This is like a dream come true: the EL DORADO lineup sounding confident and creative, lava-surfing through an incredible range of styles. To hear the classic Aterciopelados thrash-snarl on 'La gomela' and 'Quieto veneno' is pure bliss. The morbid Mexicana of 'La cuchilla' has a menace and humor that is absent from the band's recent work. With the exception of her lukewarm rendition of 'Mujer gala,' Andrea's performances here are absolutely astounding. All the voices in her complex personality are heard here: the rabid rocker, surreal siren, vocal acrobat, eloquent poetess, and on the amazing 'Sortilegio' you get to hear them all. Any Aterciopelados fan should listen to this if they (like me) found GOZO PODEROSO tame and disappointing.
