5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Animation, March 18, 2007

This review is from: El Doctor, Joy Street & Asparagus (DVD)
Suzann Pitt is primarily an artist, who occasionally does an animated film. The three she has produced, all presented here along with a good profile of the artist, are quite remarkable.
"Asparagus," with its surreal and sexual imagery, made a major impact on its appearance in 1979, and toured midnight shows with David Lynch's film "Eraserhead."
"Joy Street" is an emotional roller-coaster ride with a woman in crisis--an unusually sophisticated presentation for animation.
"El Doctor" is her first "story" animation--an elderly doctor flashes back to what he could have done differently--also very unusual for animation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Important DVD Release Ever, April 28, 2007
This review is from: El Doctor, Joy Street & Asparagus (DVD)
Calling all weirdies, prepare to go to weirdie heaven. This is the DVD you have been waiting for your entire twisted little lives. Finally, the collected works of the Suzan Pitt, the greatest animator on Earth, are available for you to blow your mind apart and put it back together again with brand new custom chrome weird pipes protruding from your weird engine. If you've never seen Pitt's work, then prepare to have you inner caterpillar changed into a sabre tooth butterfly. Take ever scene that made you stomach drop in a David Lynch movie, add to that every time you've lost your breath in a Alejandro Jodorowsky film, sprinkle with essence of David Cronenberg, mix them with Gerald Scarfe's animated sequences from Pink Floyd the Wall, bake well in Salvador Dali's melting oven, garnish with the collected videos of Tool and then stick in your DVD player. These animated masterpieces far outdistance any animation made for adults ever. Imagine you are trapped in a spaceship and the Captain's gone insane; taking you light years beyond Heavy Metal the Movie, past The Fantastic Planet, even further than the Ralph Bakshi nebula. The colors alone makes the Yellow Submarine look like a broken down school bus. And if unusual depictions of sexuality are your bag, then know that these cartoons make the films of Rinse Dream look like a pile of Care Bear TV specials. Don't think this is merely for cult movie fanatics or animation junkies, either. All you out there who devote yourselves to high art, both film and painting, Suzan Pitt is the name you should have been dropping in wine and cheese land for the past 30 years. Her work makes Dali's and Luis Bunuel's Un chein andalou look like the Taco Bell Chihuahua. Even Matthew Barney's Cremaster series looks like the first season of Full House next to the legendary Asparagus, the transcendental Joy Street and Pitt's latest masterpiece, El Doctor. There are more metaphors to describe this incredible DVD than there are stars in the sky, and all of them mashed together still won't give you an idea of the impact Pitt's work will have on your psyche. Brace yourself; like in Videodrome, you will evolve after viewing, as will your idea notion of reality. If you've ever dreamed of leaving the planet, here's your chance at last.

5.0 out of 5 stars for lovers of surrealism, July 31, 2009

This review is from: El Doctor, Joy Street & Asparagus (DVD)
Great diversity of animation techniques that work surprisingly well together. As in Lynch's films, don't look for a straight story line but sit back and let yourself be drawn into this new world, sometimes dark and filled with desperation (Joy Street), other times hilarious (El Doctor) and finally, erotic and lavish (Asparagus) Every frame is a feast to the eye.
