Book Description

September 24, 2007
Baroness, (Emusca/Emmuska/Emma Magdalena Rosalia Marie Josepha Barbara) Orczy, Mrs Barstow (1865-1947) was a British novelist, playwright and artist of Hungarian origin. She was most notable for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel. Some of her paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. Her parents left Hungary in 1868, fearful of the threat of a peasant revolution. They lived in Budapest, Brussels, and Paris, where Emma studied music without success. Finally, in 1880, the family moved to London where they lodged with their countryman Francis Pichler. In 1903, she and her husband, Montague MaClean Barstow, wrote a play based on one of her short stories about an English aristocrat, Sir Percy Blakeney, Bart., who rescued French aristocrats from the French revolution: The Scarlet Pimpernel. She went on to write over a dozen sequels featuring Sir Percy Blakeney, his family, and the other members of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, of which the first, I Will Repay (1906), was the most popular. The last Pimpernel book, Mam'zelle Guillotine, was published in 1940. She also wrote popular mystery fiction and many adventure romances.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of many great Scarlet Pimpernel novels, January 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Baroness Emmuska Orczy wrote a dozen or more novels--a series on The Scarlet Pimpernel. If you aren't familiar with this character, he was an English aristocrat who with a league of his friends would disguise themselves and save French aristocrats who were about to be guillotined. He would use his wits mostly although some of the movies and TV series have him using a sword and more action than you find in the books. There are villains, heroes and romances going on. The whole series is addictive and absolutely enjoyable. Once you start reading, it is hard to put down because you are kept on the edge of your seat.

The only thing I don't care for is that a lot of the French names are hard to pronounce (since I don't know French).

The best thing about these books is that you can get them for the Kindle for free since they are in the public domain now. You can also find some that are not free. I don't know if the ones you pay for are any better--possibly they have been edited more? I find that when I read free books that are in the public domain, there are often typos or something that shows the story was scanned and OCR performed. Unless it is gone over and edited carefully, you will see a little of that.
