This review is from: El Dorado, an adventure of the Scarlet Pimpernel (Kindle Edition)
Baroness Emmuska Orczy wrote a dozen or more novels--a series on The Scarlet Pimpernel. If you aren't familiar with this character, he was an English aristocrat who with a league of his friends would disguise themselves and save French aristocrats who were about to be guillotined. He would use his wits mostly although some of the movies and TV series have him using a sword and more action than you find in the books. There are villains, heroes and romances going on. The whole series is addictive and absolutely enjoyable. Once you start reading, it is hard to put down because you are kept on the edge of your seat.
The only thing I don't care for is that a lot of the French names are hard to pronounce (since I don't know French). The best thing about these books is that you can get them for the Kindle for free since they are in the public domain now. You can also find some that are not free. I don't know if the ones you pay for are any better--possibly they have been edited more? I find that when I read free books that are in the public domain, there are often typos or something that shows the story was scanned and OCR performed. Unless it is gone over and edited carefully, you will see a little of that. |
