5.0 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT CULTURAL POETRY
I thought this was an amazing first book of poetry! Carbo covers cultural issues with humor and grace. His detail to Filipino and American pop culture is astounding as his Spanglish phrases and tagalog references. I strongly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo my first Filipino Poet, March 21, 2009
This review is from: El Grupo McDonalds (Paperback)
I saw Mr. Carbo at a writing confab somewhere. He was not on the panel, stage, whatever. He was just there. But his book was available, this El Grupo McDonald's. Being a good sport I bought a copy along with several other writers' books available. Well, did I have a surprise.

Tough, gripping my shirt front, sometimes annoying (in a positive way), Carbo's poems just charged away on the page. Immediacy, honesty, surprise. Art, in other words.

Why the hell don't we all know more about this guy from a fascinating, strange, screwed-over culture? Beats me. I'll do my part.

5.0 out of 5 stars WITTY, UNFLINCHING, ACCOMPLISHED, June 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: El Grupo McDonalds (Paperback)
Very few poets have the voice of confidence and authority Nick Carbo displays in his first book. He uses images of his native homeland that are both beautiful and disturbing, and yet he tempers every poem with a wry sense of humor that makes every insight sharper. We can't look away.
