5.0 out of 5 stars Hooray! A worthy successor to the original!!
I was a fan of El-Hazard since the re-releasing of the first OAV series. The humor, action, and romance of the series has captivated me, and still does to this day (Though El-Hazard 2 was somewhat disappointing, I'll admit, it had its good points). And now this third TV series is truly a worthy successor in the continuing adventures of Makoto and the gang (especially...

2.0 out of 5 stars why this series isn't so good...
First off, if you don't get the whole series of El Hazard The Alternative World (4 DVDs), that's because it's actually a sequel to El Hazard The Wanderers (which is about < 9 hrs in length) and that was a really good anime (I rate that at 4.5 stars) compaired to this sorry sequel. Second, After watching both El Hazard shows, I have come to the conclusion that you...

This review is from: El Hazard: The Alternative World -- The Priestess of Water (DVD)
I was a fan of El-Hazard since the re-releasing of the first OAV series. The humor, action, and romance of the series has captivated me, and still does to this day (Though El-Hazard 2 was somewhat disappointing, I'll admit, it had its good points). And now this third TV series is truly a worthy successor in the continuing adventures of Makoto and the gang (especially with a new priestess of water taking over for Miz, and she is REALLY cute to boot!). I, myself, can't wait to acquire all of this series; to me, it shines as brightly as the original (though with only a slightly lower quality of animation from the original). And as previously stated, if you ARE an anime neophyte, watch the first and second series, and then be ABSOULUTELY sure to get this one. I guarantee, neophyte or not, you won't regret it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great comeback after OAV2; lots of fun for fans of the show!, September 15, 1999

This review is from: El Hazard: The Alternative World -- The Priestess of Water (DVD)
I simply adored the first OAV series, but was EXTREMELY dissapointed with OAV2. But this series has, honestly, restored my faith in the show (so far). All the characters are back, along with some new faces; the terrific Pioneer dubbing is up to speed...in fact, I'll go as far as to say that this is THE best dub yet. And it's just lots and lots of fun...with great animation, to boot! One thing: please, do NOT see this series without having seen the first OAV series first. There's no "what happened before" explanation, so you'll be very confused. The second OAV is VERY optinional, though..you won't miss anything.;)

This review is from: El Hazard: The Alternative World -- The Priestess of Water (DVD)
This is DVD disk 1 of 4.

The series continues with more than a few of the cast from El Hazard getting transported to an alternate dimension version of the El Hazard we've become familiar with.

It's nice to see the characters adapt to their new roles. For some of them, it's their first time, for the earthlings it's their second. Don't want to provide too many details that will spoil your experience other than a hint that the ancient weapons are resolved a bit differently in this series.

Technically, this series lacks some of quality of the original series, but it's still worthwhile for die hard El Hazard fans.

Continuity Notes: El Hazard the "Alternative World" is the 3rd El Hazard series. The original "Magnificent World" is the best, so start out with that one. The "Alternative World" series is continuation of "Magnificent World" and is not part of the "Wanderers" series.

Cautions: This series is the most adult of any of the El Hazard series. Lots of sexual inuendo like a sitcom, but nothing really happens.

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't have to see the OAV to enjoy this, June 21, 2002

This review is from: El Hazard: The Alternative World -- The Priestess of Water (DVD)
The Alternative World is, acccording to the AIC site, the first TV version of the El Hazard series. It has 13 epidsodes on 4 DVDs, ... US.
Visually speaking, the colors are brilliant with slightly too much red for my eyes (a product of aging and improper equipment set-up). The quality of the art is excellent, and attention to details is good.
Audio wise, the English dub is good (Pioneer has done well with all it's English versions). Unlike some translations, the story works well in English.
The story is easy to follow, even if you haven't seen the original version. I was able to understand what was going on, who was who, and the basic point of the plot. The situations are slightly adult in nature, but it doesn't mean that a younger viewer won't enjoy the series. Overall, the story is funny and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shows the potential to be the best in the series yet!, August 29, 1999
This review is from: El Hazard: The Alternative World -- The Priestess of Water (DVD)
El-Hazard: The Alternate World is quite possibly the best addition to this already incredible series. Combining a slightly more refined version of the art from El-Hazard 2 with a plot that is so far more complex than any yet, this DVD is a sure winner. Also, the DVD format is perfect for anime, allowing for dubbed or subbed depending on the viewers prefrence. I recommend dubbed for El-Hazard, as Pioneer continues to do a stellar job in the dubbing process. Over all, a top=notch volume, and I can't wait for the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of an already magnificent series, August 21, 1999

This review is from: El Hazard: The Alternative World -- The Priestess of Water (DVD)
This new series is the perfect continuation for the already magnificiently funny, action packed, and just plain amazing series. All of your favorite characters have come back, with loves and romantic interests springing up like wildflowers. The writers still continue with the sweeping saga, and the hilarious antics of Makoto and crew, but still put out an emotional rollercoaster ride. Truly an excellent piece of anime, with a killer soundtrack to boot. I wasn't a J-Pop fan until I heard the soundtrack from the first release

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Anime DVD, December 20, 1999

This review is from: El Hazard: The Alternative World -- The Priestess of Water (DVD)
"l Hazard - The Priestess of Water"s tons of fun. I was looking for something with spoken Japanese that would help me keep up on my second language. This is doing the trick, and has classic Japanese animation to boot. Each "l Hazard"DVD has four half-hour episodes. They take place in El Hazard, which is a very colorful, imaginative ("lternative" world. The opening and closing songs are great Japanese pop songs, and the incidental music is fun and original. I'm fairly new to the Anime scene, really only familiar with Hayao Miyazaki's features (the Disney of Japan, search for "ayao Miyazaki"in VHS). But I laughed and thoroughly enjoyed this one, the first in the "l Hazard"series. I plan to get the rest of the series eventually. By the way...what does "VA"mean?

Second, After watching both El Hazard shows, I have come to the conclusion that you probably don't need to watch this series (Alternative World) at all...it's boring with a really weak plot...the anime just didn't do justice to the first El Hazard series...you can do without it... If you can manage it, try and find the series of El Hazard: The Wanderers instead...it shows how the gang first arrived in El Hazard from earth, it explains story behind the 3 priestesses, etc... and its a lot lot lot more funny than this one.

This is just great. For those of you dissapointed by El Hazard 2 this is the continuation that you were wanting for. It has beautiful animation like the original. I highly recommend El Hazard 3.
