Book Description

November 1999
This illuminating account surveys the compelling chronicle of adventure that led to the establishment of Escuela Agricola Panamericana (EAP), one of the most unusual educational institutions in Latin America. Like all great stories it casts a wide net, beginning with a splendid sweep of Central American history and its rich chronicle of discovery and colonization; examining the convergent history and role of the U.S. in the region; reviewing the story of the owners of the 330-year-old property of El Zamorano, where EAP is located, and stressing the role of EAP's pioneers, particularly the founder, Samuel Zemurray, who came to the U.S. as a Ukrainian orphan boy of 12 and became one of the richest and most influential businessmen in his new country and in Central America.

The chronicle is a synthesis of six years of research into Zamorano's history and the leading figures who created it and brought its extraordinarily effective method of teaching hands-on agriculture to fruition. The result is engaging and thought-provoking. From its pages a new Wilson Popenoe emerges in an accurately balanced account of his role as the founding Director, combined with a critical appraisal of his character that does not lose sight of the whole man. The role of many professors is discussed, and their particular virtues and flaws are portrayed with both humor and sensitivity. Their interesting lives and the lives of 14 former students, who helped build the sound 'Learning- by-Doing' system, are vividly described. The history is amplified with 234 photographs from old phases of EAP's history.

This book gives a comprehensive perspective into this singular international college in the highlands of Honduras that has graduated more than 5,000 of the most capable and recognized agronomists of the Tropical American region.

This review is from: El Zamorano : Meeting the Challenge of Tropical America (Hardcover)
This book contains fascinating history of Central America, Honduras, & Zamorano. Of interest even if you were not a graduate of this institution. Not well known in the US, but its history and reputation in Latin America are legendary. Very worthwhile read.

Love it love it love it. I like how the author describe Central America and Zamorano. It might need some more extra editing, but not critical.
