2.0 out of 5 stars Arraras knows the "secret" and you don't, August 25, 2002
By A Customer
I read this in the English version. Arraras begins with an intro that states "she knows Selena's secret" and ends by explaining that, since Yolanda Saldivar told her the "secret" off the record, Arraras cannot reveal it. She says the reader needs to read between the lines to discover aspects of the secret that have since become public knowledge and were therefore OK for her to include in her book.

I'm not a big Selena fan and this account seemed balanced for the most part-- but I can see that serious fans would be upset because Arraras insists on treating Yolanda and the Saldivar family with "respect"-- she allows them their say. Although Arraras admits that Yolanda is manipulative, evasive and less than honest, Arraras seems to let this pass, avoiding confrontation in order to preserve her exclusive relationship with Yolanda and the Saldivars.

SPOILER: For what it's worth, the secret apparently was that Selena may have been planning to leave her husband, may have been romantically involved with a plastic surgeon in Mexico, may have been planning to take up residence in Mexico and open a clothing factory there, pursuing a career in the fashion industry against her father's wishes.

1.0 out of 5 stars An incoherent, yet troubling account of the Selena Case, May 10, 1998
Ma. Celeste Arraras, uses this book to promote her news magazine Primer Impacto. The sensationalist title of the book should be ignored because Arraras doesn't shed light on 'Selenas secret' if there really was one, and it was not Arraras' marketing bonus for the book. Arraras promises to tell the reader un-revealed details about the singer's life, and swears she will discuss important characters in the singer's life which the average Selena fan really doesn't know. However, Arraras only lightly touches on such aspects and reveals later in the book that the alleged secret cannot be revealed out of professional ethics. The book doesn't unearth any hidden truth, rather than create a sensation in the reader, that the book is nothing more than a re-telling of the tabloid rumors that swirled around Selena and Yolanda. However, Arraras basically tells the reader "I won't tell you, YOU figure it out" and with a series of hypothesis and questions (which one though she would answer) leaves the reader more confused than before he read the book. A meaningless work of literature which doesn't add a thing to the plot of the murder of Tex-mex queen Selena Quintanilla Peréz. I prefer the movie, eventhough it may be a bit soft.

1.0 out of 5 stars One Star for one BAD book....., March 7, 2000
By HuGh (Texas.) - See all my reviews
