Biography

Hard bop/post-bop pianist Eldar Djangirov has accomplished something that the vast majority of jazz artists -- pianists or otherwise -- will never accomplish: he landed a contract with a major label (Sony Classical) when he still wasn't old enough to vote. It is not uncommon for people to learn to play jazz during their adolescent years (especially in Western Europe), but most of them won't record… Read more in Amazon's Eldar Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Art Tatum meets Chick Corea, April 30, 2005
By blyons (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This CD is simply outstanding and belongs in any serious pianist's record collection. First you hear traditional jazz piano and then pyrotechnic runs not heard since Art Tatum tickled the ivories. This kid has chops. Just when you think you have his style wired, he drops in some of the angular cascading pentatonics used to great effect on Chick Corea's "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs." Several great players accompany him on this first solo effort including Michael Brecker and John Patitucci. Without a doubt Eldar is the finest young pianist to come along in many years. Listen for yourself below. If you are a fan of Jazz Piano, prepare to be impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A burning jazz star, March 29, 2005
Whew. That's all I can say after listening to the first cut, "Sweet Georgia Brown." Eldar takes the tune at something around ludicrous speed, and John Patitucci & Todd Strait hold on for dear life. But after cooking through that, we're treated to a ballad to offset the breakneck speed the album opens with. This would be the crux of Eldar's burgeoning skills. He seems to distill many who have come before, and be able to offer something of his own from all the disparate sources hidden within his notes. Truly somebody to be watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incomparable talent, July 8, 2006
For the 1 reviewer out of 25 who was hypercritical of Eldar's performances as lacking "soul", either the rest of us are crazy or he should rethink his position. I've been a professional pianist for about 32 years and I have never heard anyone master the piano to the extent Eldar does- he is a combination of Vladamir Horowitz, Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner, Bill Evans, you name it- he can play it, and with his own personal signature as well. After hearing him at Yoshi's, I invited 25 friends (many of them professional musicians with years of experience) to hear Eldar in October at the Legion of Honor Museum in SF and not one of them diagreed with my assessment. A virtuoso like this comes along once in a lifetime and there is bound to be one critic who, unable to dispute the remarkable technique, falls back on the tired comment about "soul". If those same criticss heard the same quality coming out of the old masters' hands, then suddenly it would have soul. I guarantee you, unless Eldar gets in a car wreck or self-destructs on drugs or some other foolish vice, he is destined to become one of the all-time greats in the world of jazz piano.

Yes, he's young. Yes, he's fast. But why does he have to live up to Art Tatum or Oscar Peterson right out of the gate?
