5.0 out of 5 stars WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!, October 18, 2010

I know the sellers won't appreciate this but as of this date October 18th 2010, Bethesda is giving this game Elder Scrolls Daggerfall as well as Elder Scrolls Arena for FREE on their website [...]

This is a free downloaded file to be used in DOSbox which is a DOS emulator that will allow old DOS games to run under the current windows operating systems. DOSbox the emulator is also a free download. Please check this out before purchasing because these retailers are absolutely ripping people off with these super high prices for games that are 15 years old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ground Breaking!, December 26, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall (CD-ROM)
This game forever changed my ability to play console RPGs. I was one of those people who started with a game called Miracle Warriors on the Sega Master System and then converted to Final Fantasy when the Nintendo and Super Nintendo were released.

Imagine creating a character of your choice and then being dropped into a massive fantasy world with no boundaries. This is the element that TES - The Elder Scrolls brings to the table. You can follow the main quest or you can adventure and grow your character to the edge of godliness. There are no invisible walls or guided boundaries in your way. You can visit thousands of locations, join hundreds of guilds/factions, go on infinite quests, and create spells/magic items.

Anyway, thats a quick peek at the game. I could easily take up a hundred pages and fill them with vivid detail, but you should just buy and play it instead.

Why is a game made in 1996 selling for $70? Simple, it's totally kick a**!

Cons:
The graphics are a bit dated by todays account. Try viewing some screenshots on the web to get an idea. Think Doom style graphics.

This game can be difficult to get running on a modern machine for the novice. Often times it requires an Emulator like DosBox or heavy tweaking. In WinXP there is a bug that causes quest monsters/items to be invisible which pretty much ruins the game. There are work arounds, and it doesn't happen to everyone, but beaware of the difficulties of getting this to run. It WILL run though!

Hopefully that helps. Try: www.elderscrolls.com for more information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Title and its FREE!, February 22, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall (CD-ROM)
This game was groundbreaking when it was released in the mid 90's. It is probably still the largest sandbox style game to this date. You are not required to follow any quest line nor do you fill a specific character role. You simply put into a world where you can do as you please. The world is HUGE! There is roughly 15,000 towns and villages with over 750,000 npc's. It has been estimated that Marrowinds world, the sequal to Daggerfall, is about 0.01% the size of Daggerfalls. I highly suggest any RPG fans, Eldar Scrolls fans, or anybody looking for an amazing game that is extremely fun and to this day does not have many titles that can compare, on top of being 14 years old, I highly suggest you go to the Eldar Scroll website and download this title. It has been free for download, legally, since summer of 2009. Enjoy they just don't make them like they used to.

5.0 out of 5 stars RPG Freeform - Unlimitted Freedom to Explore and Enjoy, January 26, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall (CD-ROM)
To my knowledge there is no game like it on the market. Arena was good, but Daggerfall, 15 years after its release, still has me mesmorized.

There is no limit in this game. I love creating my own character classes, then joining some guilds to grow my character. The game story does not begin until the player accepts the first official quest. The story will not even begin to advance until that first quest has been acted on. Then, watch out. Trust me. You will want to have grown your character to some degree before beginning the story. That encounter with a Vampire Ancient in the 3rd official game quest still makes me shiver . . .

What do you want to do with your character? Buy a house? No problem. Buy a ship? No problem. Break into an armorer's shop and steal him blind, over and over and over (curtesy of a little bug), then sell the stuff back to the same armorer after you've outfitted yourself with the best available at your level while increasing your mercantile skill? No problem.

Even though the graphics are quite dated, the game is fantastic for the casual and hardcore gamer alike. This game is not for the person who requires a story line to keep advancing. This game, simply as a stand alone without any story, would be good enough play. The endless variety of dungeons and the large number of challenging creatures make this game memorable.

There are some pretty bad bugs, though. For example my characters would sometimes fall through the map and end up in a state of limbo where I could see the dungeon from outside, but not be able to re-enter it, or I would simply fall and fall and fall until I fell into water or darkness. Then there was a time when I leveled up to level 13 and discovered that I had suddenly attained demigod status by accident (all attributes at 90+ out of 100), only to have my hit points reduced to 4. There's nothing worse than bieng the most powerful person on the planet when you could be killed by a rat sneezing in the next room . . . Another bug that would really "bug" me was going into a dungeon on a guild quest and not being able to fulfill the objective, or having fulfilled the objective, a teleport portal sends you to a part of the dungeon from which there is no escape. Save often and keep an eye on your stats. I used three save slots for each character I played with: one for before I did something or went anywhere, and two for alternating saving while I was actively engaged in doing something or going somewhere. Therefore if something went wrong due to a bug, in a worst case scenario I could go back to before I even accepted the quest or leveled up, thus avoiding the loss of countless hours invested in the character.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Living breathing world, but Do NOT Buy it!, November 3, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall (CD-ROM)
I know that the title may be a bit Contradictory, but that is because QUITE a while ago, Daggerfall was released for free by Bethesda Softworks. However, Still, do not get the official download from [...], but instead download from: [...] , As it includes an Installer .exe and other features, such as Every Patch for the game (Which the official Bethesda release, to my knowledge, does not include) and Pre-Configured DOS-Box settings, so you do not need to go and re-open DOS-Box to load, but just click on a Shortcut. Also, this game was designed for MS-DOS, so you will need a DOS Emulator to play on Modern Operating Systems, Like DOS-Box. Anyways, onto the actual review. Daggerfall is the Second game in the Highly Acclaimed "The Elder Scrolls" franchise of RPG's, and, might I add, is one of the largest RPG's ever made! In the game, you are a friend of the Emperor of Tamriel, Uriel Septim, who has sent you to the Kingdom of Daggerfall in the Illiac Bay of Tamriel, seperating the southern coast of High Rock from the northern coast of Hammerfell, to exorcise the walking spirit of the late King of Daggerfall, Lysandus, but soon the story takes a drastic turn to something FAR greater than avenging his death. What seperates this from other RPG's is that the game takes place entirely from the perspective of the hero, unlike traditional RPG's, which usually have a Bird's Eye view, like Final Fantasy, Baldur's Gate, or Wasteland, but more like Earlier RPG's, like Wizardry, or DOOM. Combat is controlled by holding down the Right mouse button, and moving your mouse in the direction you want to swing your weapon. Leveling is done in a way Unique to The Elder Scrolls, where, instead of gaining Experience Points, you raise skills by Practicing them by using them, and when they have raised sufficiently, you level up. There is a large amount of Content in Daggerfall, and the landmass is the size of Great Britain, making it one of the largest Landmasses in a Game, seconded only to Minecraft's generated worlds which can be up to 5x the surface area of Earth. There is so much in Daggerfall, it is too much to explain in a review. If you wish to learn more about the game (or the Franchise in General), I would recommend going to the UESP, an unofficial wiki dedicated to the Franchise, with Pages upon Pages dedicated to Daggerfall, including Walkthroughs, FAQ's, and Beastiaries for every monster and enemy in the game. I would say, get this. It is a wonderful experience that shouldn't be missed, no matter what! No, Really, get it now!

This game re-defined role playing gaming for me upon its release in the mid 90s. I still to this day, enjoy this game even above its sequels. That is, until Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is released, then I may be inclined to change my mind.
