2.0 out of 5 stars A great game with one major flaw
I really liked this game at first, but I couldn't bring myself to playing it when I found out one particular quality of the game. What I am referring to is the fact that no matter where you are, the game difficulty will be appropriately set to your current level. This is one of the worst decisions ever. What is the point of writing a game that is totally immersive and...

The last time I played a game that took as much of my time, it was Diablo II: LOD. I played it the same way - that is, by myself. Although it was playable as a multiplayer online game (MMORPG), I don't often play that way. One of the most unusual things about Oblivion is that it was designed to be played by one person, alone. For that kind of game, it is just excellent. You can follow the usual paths, strike out on your own, interact somewhat with others, go at your own pace. There's no real point to 'leveling up', as the game 'levels' with you. I like that aspect a lot as well.

Altogether well thought out and a lot of fun to play. I have only played one game, in which I have become the Champion of Cyrodiil, The Grey Fox (head of the Thieves Guild), the Arch-Mage of the Mages Guild, the Grand Champion of the Arena, and the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood - and I'm still playing and having a good time.

It has sucked a great deal of time from my life.

This is a game you could play for what seems like 20 minutes, but in reality 4 hours have passed by. I bought this game just under 3 weeks ago, and the in-game save says I already spent 80 hours on it. I'm not even close to beating it yet either. This game is so non-linear... you can do pretty much whatever mission you want, at any time, and your character can grow in numerous different ways depending on what you decided to be (murderous evil sorcerer, thief, heroic warrior or battle-mage, you can be a good guy or a bad guy at any time). Although, if you like something faster-paced, you can just focus on the main mission, but I imagine that's less fun.

You need a really good computer. I have an Core 2 Duo 6600, GeForce 7950GT, 2 GB ram. I tried the "highest" settings at 1024 resolution, but it gets too choppy when your fighting so it's hard to see what's going on. I didn't want to turn them down at first because the game is just so gorgeous like that, but I wound up running under "medium"-ish settings and it's pretty smooth.

I sorta wish I had my 80 hours back. I've got a cool C# project I'd like to finish. But I'm just too addicted that I'll probably spend another 80 soon :-)

once you begin to play this game. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay engrossing. Seriously addictive. The only drawback is that you have to have a pretty powerful computer to play it. Even though my machine exceeds all recommendations for this game, it still crashes to the desktop on a fairly regular basis, and it took some serious tweaking to get it to run in the first place.

5.0 out of 5 stars WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!, May 15, 2009

This review is from: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (DVD-ROM)
I am seeing constant complaints about how Oblivion is too easy. There are also a pretty good number of people who are annoyed by how the items are leveled. The leveled creatures and items are part of the game but there is a way too get around it.

I'm going too ask now... who read the actual game manual? If you didn't just rush into the game and you actually took the time too look at the part marked OPTIONS you can clearly see that the game allowed you too CHANGE THE DIFFICULTY!!! The higher the game difficulty is the faster you'll upgrade, the items you get are better, and the harder the ENEMIES ARE!!!!!

For you people who hate fast travel I have exciting news for you... YOU DON'T HAVE TOO FAST TRAVEL!!!!! It is very true that you can walk where you want, when you want, if you want too.

For you Morrowind fans who think it is fun too walk across Vardenfal for hours relying on crappy directions given by a skooma addict ashlander, most people I know found it nice too know where they are going. They also liked the fact that they could walk more than five steps without catching blight or another of the many diseases they have in Morrowind.

The game also (unlike morrowind) gives you an incentive too be an Argonian. They added more sunken caves and quests that involve swimming. Argonians can wear helmets (Which they couldn't do in Morrowind) and are 100% disease resistant (which they also were not in Morrowind).

Does anyone remember the sneak skill in Morrowind? Do you remember how it was impossible to upgrade? No matter how high it was you couldn't remain undetected like you can in Oblivion. Also most enchanted items that fortified skills were CAST WHEN USED!!!!!! It is far more helpful to be able too equip the item when you wear it and not have too cast it every two seconds. For those who think Oblivion is glitched. I challenge you to go too the Imperial city and jump around. Now go too Vivec and jump around. If you jumped around in Vivec you probably fell through the floor and ruined your Morrowind file forever. In the Imperial city you will just jump around.

Last rant. There are two simple words I want too share with you that you will not hear in Oblivion but you will see, hear, and experiance first hand in Morrowind. Let me spell it out for you...C-L-I-F-F R-A-C-E-R!!!!!
You are never attacked by these annoying birds in Oblivion, but every minute one happens two appear and then takes five minutes too fly down and attack you.

Maybe I couldn't find the Dwemer cube and thats why i'm disgruntled. But I believe Oblivion trumps Morrowind in the tenth degree. I will leave you with the most comforting thing I have ever heard regarding Oblivion. THERE IS NO FARGOTHS HIDING PLACE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best RPG anywhere., August 6, 2008

This review is from: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (DVD-ROM)
I originally got Oblivion for the 360 and I was shocked. I've never had so much fun. The AI, visuals, story lines, all of it was superb. I'd find myself wandering through the woods just to see all the visual beauty. On more than one occasion I recall simply saying, "this is just beautiful". The game tweaks the quality based on what your hardware will support, so the game will run on hardware less than the best, which is really nice of Bethesda to do. The non-player characters (NPCs) live their own lives making the game so enjoyable. Unlike so many games where the NPC walks back and forth waiting for you to interact with it, Oblivion NPCs carry on about their own business. Depending on the time of day, they may be eating dinner at the local pub and not interested in selling anything to you. I started playing it two years ago. I am still enjoying it, and there are still things to discover in all the ruins I haven't come across yet. This game defines the standard, and all others come up short. I've tried other games hoping to find one as enjoyable, but they just do not add up. Bethesda put so much effort into the smallest and most insignificant parts of the game, that actually make the realism and experience the best. I've even had my horse run off chasing and getting into a fight with a deer buck. Incredible. I fell in the floor laughing (horses and deer do actually get into scuffles). I
later bought the PC version in order to discover the vast world of Mods. Amazing. The only thing missing is more primary content from Bethesda. I can't wait.
One word of caution... you can waste a LOT of time with this game. But with the ability to play for only ten minutes, save and stop, it can be precisely whatever time you want to be wasted.

I really liked this game at first, but I couldn't bring myself to playing it when I found out one particular quality of the game. What I am referring to is the fact that no matter where you are, the game difficulty will be appropriately set to your current level. This is one of the worst decisions ever. What is the point of writing a game that is totally immersive and free ranging if you can survive any area you wander into. The fun of playing such a game is the possibility of wandering into an area where you could get slaughtered if you came across some high level creature. You reload and make a mental note of that area and look forward to going back there when you are more powerful.
This is just my personal opinion about one aspect of the game. If you don't feel the same way, then this will be a very enjoyable game for you. If you agree, try the Gothic series (Best immersive games I have ever played).

4.0 out of 5 stars It's true, hard core gamers will have no life., November 7, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (DVD-ROM)

This title, I purchased the day it came out. Since them, I have created character after character. . I'm not sure when it will end.
The graphics are quite simply some of the best we will ever see *point to note here, that with the other two add on games with dx10 capability the game is even better*.

The character generation is the most comprehensive I have ever seen. You can either go simple, or spend half an hour designing your character.

I give it five for addiction and good looks and the length of time you get for exploration and interration which is a seriously long time. It loses a star overall because of the other characters. They are *ok* but sometimes the voice acting is just uninspiring.

Half Life 2, whilst not comparing, had very good character interractions. Oblivion seems to have spent the money on everything else and left the people out. It's ok, I forgive, I'm about to create another character ;)

if you haven't played this yet... you don't know what a good open-ended RPG is!

graphics: the graphics are great... but you need a good system to run them... i have windows vista home premium server pack 1 with an intel centrino dual processer 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, and Nvidia GeForce' 93000m GS 512MB. and it ran smooth and perfect on that... and i didn't have any trouble with using the game on vista.... it really works... even better than on xp!

gameplay: at first... like every game... it's kinda hard... but it's really easy to get used to it. i love the armor and weapons...and you even get to make your own spells and enchant your armor with anything you want!!!!... i made this one bow that had 200 frost, fire, and elecrical damage, drain health 100 points for 30 seconds, damage 100 points of health for 30 seconds and soul trap for 3 seconds (soul trap... traps the power of the soul you kill with a soul trap on it and lets you use it for enhancements)... and i called it "THE REAPER" :P (i used it to kill the final boss in the main quest... and it only took 1 shot.... good thing too... because it only had one shot in it.... see, if you enhance weapons they have an amount of times you can use them before you have to recharge them... and since i made soo many enhancements on that bow it only had one shot...) i think that's a suitable name... don't ya think??? ^.^

music: it's kinda cool.... there is alot of music in oblivion...and most of it is kinda creepy...

story: there is so many stories!!! and all of them are really good... and for me... the story is everything! and if a game doesn't have a good story i hate it!!! but if it does have a good story... i don't even care if the graphics suck... good thing this game has alot of great stories and good graphics... and it even has some famous actors in it... well not in it... they play the voices of some of the charactors: Patrick Stewart, Terrence Stamp, and Sean Bean.

replay value: what would an RPG be without really good replay value.... in other words IT'S GREAT!!!!!!

doesn't that sound awesome.... but the thing you need to know.... is that this game is super addicting.... i played it for 6 days straight with 3 hours of sleep.... i couldn't stop playing!!!

so if you think you can control yourself... get this game AFAP(as fast as posible)!!!

P.S. oh and make sure you look up the cheat for money... it makes the game alot more fun if you don't have to keep making money... i only used like 18 million thoughout the entire time i played... so you see why you need the cheat....18 million isn't easy to get otherwise!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best RPG yet, October 29, 2008

This review is from: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (DVD-ROM)
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is the greatest role-playing game to date. It combines an enormous world, a plethora of quests, dynamic monsters, and intelligent skill leveling into an addictive game you won't be able to stop playing.

The size of the world is staggering, as are the number of quests offered. You can find most quests simply by overhearing conversations, or talking to people. You can also join any (or all) of the 4 guilds: the Fighters Guild, the Mages Guild, the Thieves Guild, or the Dark Brotherhood (the assassins' guild). All guilds come with a number of their own quests, as well as advancement and rewards. Or you can always just wander around stumbling into fights, castles, caves, breaking into houses, and going on random quests. Hours of entertainment are guaranteed, you can spend all your time doing what you want and ignoring the parts of the game you find boring.

One of the improvements over other RPGs is the dynamic strength of the monsters and NPCs. As you gain in levels, they gain in strength. So there will never be situations like in Diablo where fighting skeletons becomes ridiculous after you gain a few levels. This keeps the game interesting, and allows you to go on any quest you want at any time without worrying about your level.

I also love the way skill increases are handled. Each character has 21 skills (7 fighting, 7 thieving, and 7 magic) which gain in strength as you use them. Which means if you never use a bow, your marksmanship skill will never increase. This is an excellent way of character growth because the skills you use the most are the ones which improve the most. When creating your character you specify 7 "major" skills which will increase faster and lead to level increases. These skills can be whatever you want, making most characters into a hybrid of fighter/thief/mage.

The combination of quests, skills, and an enormous world allow an unprecedented amount of flexibility in molding your character any way you like, making this an amazing game for any fan of RPGs.

If you like RPG's.. then this is a must have game.

The only draw back i see is that it is NOT playable online.

The graphics are top notch, game play is good. There are a great many add ons to edit this game as well.. so if looking for an open ended game with well over 300 hours of RPG fun, then look no further.
