More About the Author

Trained first as a social worker and then as a psychologist, I worked for many years a psychotherapist and health educator. Now 'retired' from the workforce, I am a free-lance writer, an editor, a columnist and the author of seven books.

My first book 'TRANSFORMATION THROUGH MENOPAUSE' was published in New York by Bergin & Garvey in 1991. Described by one reviewer as an 'heirloom book,' it was the first to focus on the spiritual and psychological aspects of the 'change of life,' and to reframe this important phase of women's lives as a significant rite of passage and an opportunity for personal growth. It continues to make steady sales, and appears on an increasing number of recommended reading lists for mid-life women.

The second book, 'ELDERWOMAN: reap the wisdom, feel the power, embrace the joy,' was published by Findhorn Press in March, 2002. 'ELDERWOMAN' is not only - as the name suggests - a book about aging and personal development, it is also a reminder of the ancient and special relationship which mature women have always had with the Earth and the world of Nature. This book is about reclaiming that special relationship and living it in a way that fits the twenty-first century. It is about women re-owning their power and taking their rightful place as 'wise elders' in a culture that badly needs the benefit of their wisdom and understanding.

My next book, 'THE LILYPAD LIST:7 steps to the simple life'is all about living simply and sustainably - and joyfully. This is something which is becoming increasingly important in these days of looming environmental crisis. 'THE LILYPAD LIST' was published by Findhorn Press in 2004 and has now been translated into several languages.

In 2006, my first collection of short stories was published by Bean Terrace Books under the title 'APRICOT HARVEST'. And in 2009 I published my first full-length novel, 'THE BIRD MENDERS', a story of love and healing.

Returning to non-fiction in 2002, I edited the anthology, 'GREENSPIRIT: PATH TO A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS' published by O Books, who will also be publishing, in 2011, a new book by me called 'DOWNSHIFING MADE EASY: How to plan for your planet-friendly future.'

If you visit my primary website at www.elderwoman.org you can find out a whole lot more about me and my work and how to contact me. There you can also sign up for my e-zine and apply for an invitation to the social network I created especially for 'third-age' women. I have two other websites also. These are www.simpleliving.org.uk. and www.greenspirit.me.uk I hope you will visit one - or maybe even all - of them.

By the way, if you are interested in simple living, somewhere in the bowels of Amazon.com is the 'So You'd Like To' guide that I wrote about that topic, listing all my favourite books on the subject. It is at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/syltguides/fullview/573NMGJ9LOVR/ref=cm_pdp_sylt_title_1 (but you will have to copy and paste that into your browser window I'm afraid, as Amazon isn't allowing me to put live links on this page yet. I hope they change that rule soon!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Attn. All Women Entering the Third Age of Life!, January 10, 2003
By
Merrylyn Janiga (Prescott, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elderwoman: Reap the wisdom, Feel the Power, Embrace the Joy (Paperback)
Eureka!
As a lifetime acquirer of books, and increasingly less-than-overwhelmed by most of the material I read, this is a glorious exception. Marian McCain has written what should be required reading for all women approaching/already in their menopausal years............This outstanding book deals with every possible aspect of the transition into the third age of a woman's life, shedding light, wisdom and credibility into all those dark corners we barely knew existed. I commenced reading 'Elderwoman' at about 9:00pm one evening, and was startled to look up, a little while later, and find it was 2:00am, the following day. I forced myself to put the book down, wanting to savour the promise of 'having something left for later.'

Marian McCain's insights into this fascinating passage in a woman's life are almost uncanny; I had the distinct impression that she must have had a direct 'link' to my own experiences as she wrote. It is, I find, enormously comforting to have my own personal journey into Elderhood 'validated' by the writings of this very wise woman.

Please, ladies, do yourself a huge favor; if you never buy another book, BUY THIS ONE!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An uplifting message of strength, balance, and love, August 18, 2002
This review is from: Elderwoman: Reap the wisdom, Feel the Power, Embrace the Joy (Paperback)
Elderwoman: Reap The Wisdom, Feel The Power, Embrace The Joy by transpersonal psychotherapist and health educator Marian Van Eyk McCain is a "reader friendly" guide to enjoying the years beyond menopause, a time that more women than ever before in human history will be fortunate to see with the longer life expectancies of the modern era. Embracing a woman's relationship to the elements of earth, air, fire, and water, individual chapters cover spiritual matters of learning to enjoy the good things in life, having the courage to speak out in personal and political matters, cherishing one's body and soul, and a great deal much more. A powerful and uplifting message of strength, balance, and love, Elderwoman is strongly recommended for personal self-help reading lists and Women's Studies reference collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toward Elder Status and Joy, October 19, 2002
By
Kerrdelune (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elderwoman: Reap the wisdom, Feel the Power, Embrace the Joy (Paperback)
Marian McCain has written a glorious book on woman's journey into her third age (or cronehood), and how I wish this book had been in existence when I began my own voyage some years ago! Life's journey is a curious and winding trail full of twists, turns and surprises, one which takes us through shaded valleys, across moonlit mesas, and at last up into the high clear air of the mountains. The journey to elderhood should be joyful and without fear, and Elderwoman is the perfect volume to take along on our travels, an atlas and a guide book chock full of wisdom, compassion, simplicity, lightness and yes, passion too. I keep a copy of this book close by, and I return to it often.
