More About the Author

Christopher Paolini was born on November 17, 1983 in Southern California. He has lived most of his life in Paradise Valley, Montana with his parents and younger sister, Angela. As a child, he often wrote short stories and poems, made frequent trips to the library, and read widely. The idea of Eragon began as the daydreams of a teen. Christopher's love for the magic of stories led him to craft a novel that he would enjoy reading. The project began as a hobby, a personal challenge; he never intended it to be published. All the characters in Eragon are from Christopher's imagination except Angela the herbalist, who is loosely based on his sister. Christopher was fifteen when he wrote the first draft of Eragon. He took a second year to revise the book and then gave it to his parents to read. The family decided to self-publish the book and spent a third year preparing the manuscript for publication: copyediting, proofreading, designing a cover, typesetting the manuscript, and creating marketing materials. During this time Christopher drew the map for Eragon, as well as the dragon eye for the book cover (that now appears inside the Knopf hardcover edition). The manuscript was sent to press and the first books arrived in November 2001. The Paolini family spent the next year promoting the book at libraries, bookstores, and schools in 2002 and early 2003. In summer 2002, author Carl Hiaasen, whose stepson read a copy of the self-published book while on vacation in Montana, brought Eragon to the attention of his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, which is part of Random House. Knopf published Eragon in August 2003. Eldest, which continues the adventures of Eragon and the dragon Saphira was published in August 2005, and in December 2006, Fox 2000 released their movie adaptation of Eragon in theaters around the world.

2.0 out of 5 stars Eldest, May 10, 2006
In contrast with Paolini's first book, Eragon, Eldest is in the mediocre category. I found Roran's part very boring, and I skipped most of them. Roran's part had no connection to the plot of this book. It was just there to mislead the reader to believe that he would eventually betray Eragon. That USUALLY clever Modus Operandi in the book was quite obvious in the beginning. If you want suspense, try reading the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie. She meticulously gives all the clues, yet never lets the reader know who did the crime.

Paolini lost his spark, and took a spin toward the more monotonous side of writing. He also added some green-minded passages in the book. "This is an easy way to lose your manhood," is one of them. If that were meant to be funny, he could at least have written that in a more subtle way. The romance between Eragon and Arya was overrrated, and quite childish. "Why are you so cruel?" is a statement showing the lack of experience of Eragon. He had the opportunity to make a famous quote, but he blew it. There are many other bad things to mention, but I'm in school right now. I might add another review later.

In conclusion, Eldest was disappointing. The emotions were all mixed up, and the mood was ridiculous. The only parts enjoyable enough to mention were the parts of Solembum, Angela, and the usage of magic. The battle could have been put in better, though. Paolini could do MUCH better than that.

To all the bad thinkers of the book:

People!!! Geez Its just a book!!! A Fantasy!!!!!

Its made up!!!! So what if it is sort of copied!,Its not like I see you writing a book a doing any better. Get over it! The book is there and there is nothing you can do to stop it! All you are doing is saying the bad things, what about the good or in you words,NON COPIED?! I really enjoyed this book, and for all the awful things I read you won't convince me to dis like it. Because of all the bad comments about it, it just made me buy the book not vise/versa! Well.... Thanks.
