Editorial Reviews

Jean Stapleton was nominated for an Emmy(r) (1982, Outstanding Lead Actress In a Limited Series or a Special) for her portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt in this made-for-TV biography, first telecast May 12, 1982. The film picks up Mrs. Roosevelt's storied life after the 1945 death of her husband, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. At the request of new president Truman, Eleanor serves as a United Nations delegate, spending much of her time tilting with dedicated anti-FDR politico John Foster Dulles (E.G. Marshall). She goes on to spearhead the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, proving to Dulles - and to the Soviet delegate (Freddie Jones) - that she's anything but soft on Communism. Newly remastered.

I recently purchased this video documentary as a gift to my father (2012). He has viewed it at least four times and seen it once on PBS. He is a retired high school Social Studies teacher and loves history. He often comments on how much he enjoys this movie. I have given him several movies as gifts over the last ten years, but this is by far the one he most enjoyed.

Jean Stapleton brings down the house as Eleanor Roosevelt after the death of FDR. She shows off her brilliant acting and presents Eleanor as a formidable but lovable widow, mother, grandmother and diplomat, who paved the way for the UN and many great women as world leaders. I bought this after Jean Stapleton's death and was pleased it did. She's is a great actress. I adored her as Edith Bunker, and this film reminds me of the depth of her talent.

Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, one of America's greatest citizens, humanitarians, and probably the greatest Fist Lady as of yet. Jean Stapleton simply became Mrs. Roosevelt. The story starts after Franklin Roosevelt has died, and follows Mrs. Roosevelt through her greatest years as a humanitarian, and United Nations Delegate. A must see for Roosevelt fans, and political enthusiasts. (Never a dull moment in this movie.)

Charming little film About Eleanor Roosevelt. Jean Stapleton was cast perfectly in the lead. Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most vulnerable but inspiring women of our lifetime. She stood as in inspiration for all women during one of the most trying time in history, we could use a few thousand more of her.

Jean Stapleton shines in this biopic. Liked the fact that it was about a time in Eleanor's life that does not usually rate much attention.
