This review is from: Electional Astrology: The Art of Timing (Paperback)
Electional astrology is a branch I've always been interested in, so I was excited to see a new book written soley about the electional branch since Robeson's volume which was released back in the 1930s I believe.
So, I got this book and my excitement concerning it quickly died down as I began flipping through the pages and skimming before I actually started reading it. Some of the things mentioned just seemed odd to me, but I thought that sense I was just skimming I was getting it out of context or something. However, then I started reading...
Apparently, even though Ms. Hampar has some 20+ years of experiance and a certificate of some sort from a Manhattan astrology school, she doesn't seem to quite grasp the subject herself. A very daring move Ms. Hampar makes is the usage of the Outer planets as the Sign rulers for Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces. While I do realize we are in the age of modern astrology, it seems so strange to utilize those three as Sign rulers in this particular branch of astrology, seeing as how it's so based on the complete scheme of planetary dignities and debelities, of which Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto do not participate. Also, this scheme of dignities and debelities is not mentioned, and any kind of 'power' Hampar points out with planets ends with Domiciles and Exaltations.
Hampar seems to enjoy making up her own rules such as suggesting Mars is a happy camper when Combust of Sol, which is really quite a serious affliction to any and all planets. She also contradicts herself by repeating the phrase "the first house represents the one initiating the action", while this particular view is true, in a chart cast for a surgery, she incorrectly assigns the patient as the First house (since the patient is not doing surgery on themselves, they are the Seventh house as the one receiving the action) and the surgeon as the Eighth house (since he is performing the surgery and thus initiating the action, the surgeon becomes the First).
One thing that I did enjoy was the structure the book. It moves along through the house wheel, spending time on elections concerning the First house and then the Second house and then the Third and so on, with at least two examples of charts for each section. Another thing I thought was nice was the addition of a glossary at the end, useful to the beginner who may be thinking "Void of what now?". Also useful was the inclusion of a list of items that might come up in electional matters and the house they are found in...even though many of them are incorrect.
Serious students of electional astrology...pass this one up.

Excellent intro to electional astrology, August 12, 2010
This review is from: Electional Astrology: The Art of Timing (Paperback)
I'm not sure why this book doesn't have better reviews. I loved it and it gave me a solid basis for electional work. Astrology is complex and elections can be tricky but quite honestly this book has everything you need in order to get started with your own elections. And like everything else in astrology you can read books all day long but until you get some hands on practice the theory doesn't mean as much.
This is not for beginners. You need a solid astrology background in the basics before you leap into something this specialized. But if you can read charts and are interested in event astrology or horary, this book is highly recommended.

Badly needed, well written, July 29, 2008
This review is from: Electional Astrology: The Art of Timing (Paperback)
Electional Astrology: the art of timing is a treasure trove of information for those who want to know more about electional astrology. I have no objection to using the transsaturnian planets in timing. You could use asteroids or anything else for elections if you wanted to. The book has so much good information that I don't understand why anyone would give it a negative review.
I bought Vivien Robson's classic 'Electional Astrology' and Hampar's book and I am set, I just need to do the work to become better at electional astrology. Hampar's book is very user friendly and perfect for the serious student who wants to learn more about electional astrology. It is recommended that the reader be familiar with basic astrology before using the book.
You could spend years or decades observing and creating your own theories about electional astrology, or take a shortcut, trust Joann Hampar's very well written and thought out book, and explore electional astrology with this seasoned astrologer figuratively looking over your shoulder. People are going to ask you about timing marriage, surgery, long trips, business meetings, interviews, and other critical timing issues when they pay you to look at charts, and if you do not have an astrology practice, you still can use the ideas in the book for your own use. Many examples and explanations. Five stars easily.
