5.0 out of 5 stars Like 1960's garage rock hippies stoned on 70's radio, time warped into a 2008 washing machine full of neon goop...
No doubt the first time you hear Awesome Color's 2006 debut you begin to think of classic bands like MC5, Blue Cheer, or The Stooges.

However, Awesome Color begins to stir things up a little on their sophomore release "Electric Aborigines", giving their listeners a very tasteful second helping of music bizarre.

Immediately, the opening tracks...

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I gave Awesome Color's debut high marks, but this record does little to nothing to make good on that records promise. The opening track "Eyes Of Light" is the standout, but much of the following record just reminds me of lots of other bad, 70's derivative blues-based rock. The debut screamed "STOOGES!" - this one is closer to "FOGHAT!" - and not even as interesting as...

Bummer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not an improvement, April 21, 2009
This review is from: Electric Aborigines (Audio CD)
I haven't given this album as much of a chance as I would like to, but on first listen it's not as immediate as their first album and doesn't seem to be any more interesting. The only really immediate track is "Already Down," probably because I'm a sucker for minor-key arrangements. This album not only has more songs, they are also longer, so it might be a problem of needing to listen to it more. But the problem is, while the music is always good, the lyrics don't really do anything. They aren't bad or anything... the problem is they fall into Sonic-Youth style catchphrases instead of actual meaning. Also, I think its really interesting that this band is considered noisy. I think it must have something to do with the horrible atmosphere we're in right now, but, aside from the opening track, this album is loud but not "noise" by any means. The Stooges were noisier than this band. I hope Awesome Color does something more interesting for their next album because I think they are a band with a lot of potential. Maybe if they did some more experimental arrangements (or actually WERE noise rock).

Immediately, the opening tracks "Eyes of Light" and "Already Down" remind me of Cream's *Disraeli Gears* meets *The Doors*, as if Ginger Baker and Robbie Krieger decided to make some strange chemical soup.

Songs "Come and Dance" or "Evil Rose" take a sweet sugary note from Jerry's Grateful Dead, while "Outside Tonight", "Do It Right", and "The Moon" sound like something proudly right off early KISS albums *Dressed To Kill* or *Destroyer*.

Sky's the limit, when Bon Scott's AC/DC subconsciously inspires a deeper tone on "Step Up" and "Taste It", or the darker side of punk on "Burning" is definitely a big grin on Alice Cooper's face.

That's how I hear it... all this colorful talent and sound without even trying.

I would simply have to say, this is one of those albums you either like it or you don't, especially when coming down off some kind of "Stooges" contact high after opening up an LP copy of Awesome Color's first recording.

Ecstatic Peace rules!!!
