Editorial Reviews

During the late '80s hard rock bands tended to either walk the line as power metal madmen or reside on the glam rock side of the tracks. However, when Guns 'n Roses hit the big time the sleaze rock flood gates opened allowing literally hundreds to stake their claim to fame. The Electric Angels were, at the time, just another name in the ring albeit with an intriguing past having evolved from seminal glam rock act Candy, an act that sold zilch but turned every hip-head in Los Angeles. Produced by Tony Visconti and recorded in London, this album was originally released in 1990. Special Limited Deluxe Collector's Edition, fully re-mastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology, includes 16-page full colour booklet.

Here's one of the best albums that nobody heard. New York (via Los Angeles) band Electric Angels were one of the latecomers to the "hair metal" scene. Actually, the hair metal tag doesn't really cover this band's sound, which is pure rock n' roll. They only released one album, but man, what an album!

This is just a completely infectious, bluesy, soulful, sublimely drunk rock n' roll album. Beyond the sweet guitar riffs and solos and the soulful melancholy vocals is a very real heart and spirit that most bands at the time lacked. Even the most mundane love song became something special when these guys play it. You think "yeah, this guy has definitely been there" when the songs turn to heartbreak. It's also just a really good, really rocking album from a band that should have made it big and survived the `90s intact. Sadly, we all know how that turned out.

If you're a fan of the late `80s and early `90s hard rock sound, this album is a must-have. I'd also recommend Electric Angels to just about anyone who enjoys a good rock n' roll album. It's impossible to listen to this album without wanting to sing/nod/air guitar/dance/have a good time. If you like what you hear (and you will), you may also want to check out Kill for Thrills' Dynamite From Nightmareland and the self-titled Royal Court of China album, both of which have a similar vibe.

Edition Notes: Electric Angels was reissued by Wounded Bird in 2009. Unlike most Wounded Bird releases, this one sounds like it may have been remastered. It's just louder, clearer and more vibrant than most of their releases. Same minimal liner notes though, and of course no bonus tracks.

Electric Angels were another band that were unfairly lumped into the hair metal craze of the late 80s/early 90s. While these guys weren't reinventing anything remotely fresh, they did what they did, and they did it well.

Musically speaking, Electric Angels were a straight-forward melodic rock band. They fit closer to the Rolling Stones or Aerosmith, than to what was popular during their heyday. The biggest treat with this record is, in my own opinion, the stellar song writing of Jonathan Daniel. This guy had a way with the words, and with lines like, "I Never Really Loved You, I Just Drank To Much," and "Crime Don't Pay, But It Has To Pay More Than The Minimum Wage," he gave me a good laugh. I mean, who writes lyrics like that anymore? While the entire album is enjoyable, my favorite tracks from the record were "Head Above Water," "The Drinking Song," "Rattlesnake Kisses," and "I Live In The City."

This album was long out of print until Wounded Bird reissued it in 2009. Most times when Wounded Bird reissue albums they put nothing extra in them at all. However, this record does seem to be louder than the original copy I have; so maybe they did remaster this album. Either way it's a great record the whole way through.

I have to agree with these reviews. I bought this album when it first came out. I still listen to it to this day. It is a great piece of work. Catchy tunes, somewhat cynical about love, well written. This album rocks in a non-traditional hair band way. It is just great, straightforward rock and roll. Would highly recommend to to anybody who likes to just rock.

This cd is incredible. Jonathan Daniel is my favorite lyricist and definately a glass half empty kind of guy. With one liners like "tying the knot would be the knot in my noose" and "I never really loved you I just drank too much". These are just a few examples of many one liners throughout. Almost nobody has heard of these guys I stumbled on to them by chance and have been a fan from first listen. If you are thinking hair band please do not these guys were a bright spot at a time when music did not have very many. Bottom line if you see this available get it you will not regret it.

One of the BEST albums to come out of this scene, and a total classic rock album regardless of sub-genre. I've been playing this thing several times a year since it came out, and it never gets old.

This out of print 1990 CD is one of the greatest rock CD's ever. This band should have huge, but with a record company who doesn't promote you and bad mangement led to The Angels quick demise. With singer Shanes' great vocal style and Ryan Roxies' great guitar work and most of all Jonathan Daniels' lyrics they are amazing. With all the great hooks and melodies, awesome lyrics and great vocals makes this CD a must have.Go and find it and play it loud
