Wine opening made easy!!,
By
This review is from: Electric Automatic Wine Opener
I've never written a review on a product before. BUT, I just had to comment on this wine opener. I just tried it for the first time this evening...IT WORKS SOOOO EASY!! IT IS UNBELIEVEABLE!! Just put it over your bottle, press the down arrow and hold it there...it lowers the screw into the cork and retracts the cork out in one easy motion. Then press the up arrow and the screw automatically unwinds throw the cork and the cork just pops into your hand. Magnificent piece work. Every wine lover should own one. I just ordered another one for my brother-in-law

Unpredictable results,
This review is from: Electric Automatic Wine Opener
Friends have this device and like it, but mine doesn't work correctly. Mine shreds corks rather than removing them, because the auger that screws into the cork is mounted at a slight angle to vertical. It isn't adjustable. I guess mine is defective, but I've read reviews on another site that indicate my experience is not unique. Even with a correctly aligned auger, I would not use this opener on an older bottle with a fragile cork, because you can't see what the hidden corkscrew is doing until it's finished, and if you haven't held the housing firmly enough the auger will wobble and you'll end up with cork soup.
My bottom line assessment is, if you have arthritis or other problems that hamper your ability to use a traditional corkscrew or a rabbit-type lever device, then this might help you. Just be aware that you have to be able to hold the housing and the bottle firm and straight simultaneously while the cork is being removed, which takes some manual strength. If you can use a traditional corkscrew fine, I'd stick with that.

Great Opener,

I love this opener! Yes you do have to hold opener and bottle at the same time, but that should be a given while opening a bottle of wine. I haven't had problems with mine at all!! It is also attractive sitting on my counter.

Nice while it lasted,

Ours died in less than 2 years and it was not used heavily. It did work well while it lasted except for cork getting stuck occassionally inside the corksrew housing. For the price, I was very disappointed in its durability. I expect better from Brookstone products.

THE OPENER DOESN'T OPEN BOTTLE WITH A GOOD CORK ON THE FIRST TRY. IT TAKES AT LEAST THREE TRIES TO OPEN. THE NEWER CORK TYPES OPEN MUCH EASIER. IT IS HARD TO START WITH OLD HANDS, THE REASON FOR PURCHASE.

Terrible customer service from Brookstone,
By
This review is from: Electric Automatic Wine Opener
I bought this item from a Brookstone retail store in Austin in September, 2009. It stopped working properly in January 2010, shredding cork or stopping before the cork is removed. I took the opener back a Brookstone store with a copy of the sales receipt. The sales clerk who said she was the "manager" started the encounter by challenging the copy of the receipt, but finally said she though it might be ok. She then said she would have to try it out. Of course the thing looks like it is working and the difficulty only occurs when actually trying to remove a cork. The clerk of course didn't have an actual bottle to try it on. She the proceeded to tell me that it failed due to normal wear and tear, this is after 4 months!! (With a 12 month warranty) She then suggested that I return it to the other Austin store where it was purchased. When I asked if that store was a different Brookstone company, she offered to sell me a floor sample at a discount; unbelievable!!!! All during this discussion she kept reminding me that I should buy the Extended Service Plan. She finally gave up and grudgingly gave me a replacement. This is customer service at the very worst. It appears that like a lot of retailers now, they are more interested in selling service contract than merchandise (i.e. Circuit City they made more money selling these contract than TV sets, BEFORE they went out of business). I was really shocked at the clerk's attitude. I have bought gadgets over the years from Brookstone and occasionally returned items DURING the warranty period without a hassle. I can only conclude that these people are in serious financial difficulty and the store personal are under enormous pressure to sell service contracts and do everything possible to avoid a warranty claim. In addition her suggestion that I return it to the original store indicates that she suffered some sales penalty by taking the item back and wanted to force me to go back to the original store. It will be a very long time before I set foot in Brookstone again.
