Book Description

Energy conservation series 1996
We've built, operated, and repaired many electric kilns. In this day of high priced energy, knowing how to operate and maintain the Electric Kiln properly is a must. Basic electrical kiln circuits are discussed, electric kiln safety, economical firing procedures, automatic controls, and the safe use of electric kilns are all included. Integrated circuits and micro-chips are common these days, but they are all sensitive to heat damage. Do you want one near a hot kiln? Does fail-safe mean that the kiln will be protected, but the ware will be lost? Or does your kiln even fail in a safe mode? The nuclear industry didn't originate the word melt-down, we did. Hey, teachers: If the janitor finishes firing your kiln after school, be sure he reads this book first! Did you know that the light radiating from a kiln peep-hole is damaging to your eyes? The proper eye filter should be used. It's in the book, too. Any box which is heated to 1800 degrees, F, should deserve proper consideration and respect. How do you put out a fire involving a box heated to 1800 degrees? Forget about water!

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

How do you repair a thermocouple? No, you do not have to replace it. This book tells you how.

How do you repair a burnt-out element? The book tells you how and you can even make the replacement element.

What can I do to save energy or minimize pollution and still use my electric kiln? These are primary topics throughout this book.

Before electronic controls, electric kilns were controlled by switches connected so that the elements were combined in series or parallel connections and you could have various heat settings. ( someone in Australia didn't understand this so he trashed the book - maybe they don't teach Ohm's Law down there. )
I still have misgivings about electronic controls on electric kilns, although I have made them and used them, too. Semiconductors are heat sensitive and placing a box with a bunch of them next to a hot kiln is not the best idea. I have no way of finding out how many electronic controls have had to be repaired, but the number would probably be high. Heat and semiconductors are not compatible. Switches still work regardless and one of our last kilns still operated with switches.

We included everything you need to know to successfully use an electric kiln, based on experience that began in 1953 with our first electric kiln. We sold our last electric kiln in 1997 when we decided we would no longer use them. All of that experience went into the book.

If you need to use an electric kiln or want to learn how to do it right, this book is for you. If you already know everything, perhaps you don't need this book in the first place.

This review is from: Electric Kiln Handbook (Energy conservation series) (Plastic Comb)
This book has no depth. It has lots of bits of information but drops out on usable detail after a short overview. The descriptions of two of the wiring schematics were wrong on elementry addition of resistors which gave me grave doubts about the technical content of the rest of the book. In short, don't bother with this book, suppliers brochures have better information. I binned my copy after 3 days.
