I received the item the other day and could not wait to listen to this version. I own the original import (nude cover), and the 1997 remaster, the best one IMHO.

I received the item the other day and could not wait to listen to this version. I own the original import (nude cover), and the 1997 remaster, the best one IMHO.

The print advertising I saw said that it was in 5.1 DTS, and contained 2-track PCM audio. So, if you are into Hi-Res sound this looked like a winner. The product info here at Amazon seems incomplete.

Unfortunately, the DVD did not contain a 5.1 remix of the album, but an extended "Making of.." culled from the original Classic Albums release. To their credit, the video is crisp, and that is in 5.1 DTS or PCM. The video is very informative, special guests like Jack Cassidy & Steve Winwood add a lot.

The CD on the other hand, remastered again, sounded flat with limited imaging and no depth to the soundstage. Tape hiss seemed very loud as well. I was disappointed.

I can understand that tampering with Jimi's original 2 channel mix could be heresy, therefore no 5.1 mix. But, an uncompressed 2-channel PCM audio version would be stunning, maybe some day.

The packaging is good, but 3 stars, for my 3rd edition, is all it deserves in my rating.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience Third Release Was The Most Troublesome. It Was The First Time That The Artist And Producer Would Clash Over The Recording Of This Album. Two Inportant People In This Project Would Leave Before The Release, Noel Redding( Bass) And Chas Chandler(Producer/Co-Manager). Cracks In The Foundation Started With The Second Album "Axis Bold As Love " When Jimi Wanted More Say In The Recording Process. The Recording Started In England And Was Moved To New York,s Record Plant Studios,Where The Bulk Of The Album Was Recorded. After Jimi Assumed The Project On His Own Many Hours Were Clocked In And It Was The Most Expensive Record At The Time.Mo Ostin Then Vice-President Of Warner/Reprise Was Concern That Was It Was Taking Too Long.Jimi Informed Him That That The Double Album Would Be Done In A Few Weeks. Jimi Was Told By Management That A Concert Tour Was Soon Approaching,So He Hurried The Albums To It,s Conpletion. Not All Would Go According To Plan, Jimi Would Design The The Cover Art With Pictures That Linda Eastman(Paul McCartney,s Future Wife) Had Taken. Jimi Had Drawn The Layout On Paper To Give The Art Department At Warners. Some Of Jimi,s Ideas Were Used And Many Were Not,Too Jimi,s Disapointment. While On Tour Jimi Was Told That In England There The Cover Was Going To Be Different From The Cover Art Used In The U.S. The Press From England Gave A Copy Of The Record Sleeve To Jimi, And He Was Angry With Rage. The Idea Was Track Records Execs, Kit Lampert And Chris Stamp Who Came Up With Design. The Inside Was The Only Thing That Jimi Had Control Over And Even That Got Lost, Engineneer Eddie Kramer And Jimi Worked On A 3-D Sound That Was Mixed Out Of Phase By Pressing Plant.Panned By Critics As Too Experimental And Disjointed. The Double LP Is Now On A Single CD," From And The Gods Made Love"To The Last Track " Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" Is A Sonic Masterpiece With Rock,Blues,Psychedelic SoundScapes That Will Blow Your Mind!42 Years Since The Release Of This Album I Still Listen Too It.It Comes Highly Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ziggy Stardust, January 3, 2009
This review is from: Electric Ladyland (w/dvd) (Audio CD)
Craftsman extraordaniere, perhaps his best work, understated control. I'm not up on all these nuances in sound, CD's MP3's hey we listened to a lot of this stuff on AM Radio. Certainly not Jimi but many others. Maybe my hearing is not as atuned and critical as others. The understated guitar lines of Jimi is so simple with layers of complexity and interplay are truly enjoyable. Listen to Long Hot Summer Night. The band again plays a big role, bass and drums give Jimi the the skill set that allow him to display his abilities. Listen to Gypsy Eyes. So many great songs perhaps one of his greatest is Rainy Day, Dream Away. Love this album. Wish I could've seen him live.
