The Best Single of 2000, November 22, 2000
This review is from: Electric Man Pt. 1 (Audio CD)
Following Mansun can be an utter frustration sometimes. Just when you start to like one of their style's they pick up and go in another direction all together. "Electric Man," like all the stuff of "Little Kix" is nothing like their last album "Six." The last album worked as a whole collective piece of work, "Little Kix" however works well when each track is played individually.
Second single "Electric Man" is the best thing on the album and arguably one of the best A-sides they've ever released. The song moves along seductively with Draper whispering about "two way mirrors where we used to kiss." Then the chorus hits and it is undoubtedly the closest thing to pop perfection I have heard in a long time.
"Bring Your Sunshine to me," sure it sounds lame but if you hear it on record it is the most uplifting thing going. By then end the chorus is repeating, falsetto's are being used and it truly is timeless pop music.
Like all of their singles, Mansun dispense B-Sides in A-side style. The two here are great, especially the first one entitled "The Drifters." With it's chrous of "repeat after me we're drifting" and "my life is still my own," this is easily the most romantic thing Mansun have done. The strings give it a luscious, epic feel, but the song sounds far from bloated like some overproduced "Be Here Now" track.
Final track "The Apartment" is more spooky than anything. It begins with Draper breathing heavily and goes on to sing about "the man in the aprtment below." Apparently he's quite strange because he "never puts his rubbish out," and "we've talked just through the vent." Still, another classic b-side.
This single (part 2 is great as well) is such a great package that I would pay album prices for it. The three tracks are all great, proving once again that Mansun are the best unknown group on the planet.
