Book Description

0750647183 978-0750647182 November 19, 2005 3rd
Electric Motors and Drives is intended for non-specialist users of electric motors and drives, filling the gap between maths- and theory-based academic textbooks and the more prosaic 'handbooks', which provide useful detail but little opportunity for the development of real insight and understanding. The book explores all of the widely-used modern types of motor and drive, including conventional and brushless D.C., induction motors and servo drives, providing readers with the knowledge to select the right technology for a given job.

The third edition includes additional diagrams and worked examples throughout. New topics include digital interfacing and control of drives, direct torque control of induction motors and current-fed operation in DC drives. The material on brushless servomotors has also been expanded.

Austin Hughes' approach, using a minimum of maths, has established Electric Motors and Drives as a leading guide for electrical engineers and mechanical engineers, and the key to a complex subject for a wider readership, including technicians, managers and students.

* Acquire knowledge of and understanding of the capabilities and limitations of motors and drives without struggling through unnecessary maths and theory
* Updated material on the latest and most widely-used modern motors and drives, including brushless servomotors
* New edition includes additional diagrams and worked examples throughout

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is very readable, up-to-date and should be extremely useful to both users and o.e.m. designers. I unhesitatingly recommend it to any busy engineer who needs to make informed judgments about selecting the right drive system."
- Drives and Controls

"A very useful reference book for anyone wanting a comprehensive understanding of motors and drives ... I have not seen another book which covers this wide subject more comprehensively and in such an easy-to-read style."
- Silicon Chip, May 2006

"I would regard this book as a light but broad coverage of many motor and drive concepts that have been around a long time."
- Dennis Feucht, Innovatia.com

"The coverage of drive types and behaviors is thorough and up to date."
- Electrical Apparatus, May 2006

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent material, highly readable, thoroughly enjoyable, September 4, 2006
By
This review is from: Electric Motors and Drives: Fundamentals, Types and Applications (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
The best book I have read on motors and drives. The narrative explains the concepts clearly, and the mathematics is basic and focused on the important points.

I have been interested in electric automobiles and this book provides an excellent foundation on basic motors and the power drive systems.

I highly recommend this book. Well worth the investment. Top notch for anyone's library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of motor fundamentals, short on circuits, December 3, 2008
By
This review is from: Electric Motors and Drives: Fundamentals, Types and Applications (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
I am a brushless dc drive engineer and I originally purchased this book looking for some deep insight into the inner workings of motor physics and the nuances of circuit operations... and of course, at the right price. This is the wrong book for my purpose, but it was worth a shot for the price, and I now have a decent book for an overview of different motor characteristics.

This book goes over each type of motor, proper applications for each type of motor, and the general methods used to drive them. As the other reviews state, there isn't a lot of math involved, however, the concepts are clearly presented from a system perspective.

If you are a systems or manufacturing engineer trying to find the right type of motor to suite an application, this book is for you. If you are a circuit-level engineer looking to maximize efficiency with waveforms while using economical design techniques, this book is not for you. I would give a recommendation, but I haven't found that book yet.

Good luck,

- J

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear Explanation of Motor Operations, June 19, 2007

This review is from: Electric Motors and Drives: Fundamentals, Types and Applications (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
I own several books on motors and drives, and have worked with industrial robots and their motor controls/feedback for several years. This book is the best resource I have found to clearly explain motor concepts, including the operation of the different types of motors, and the considerations surrounding the design of the drive electronics. Highly recommended.
