The best country artist I've heard in 20 years, April 17, 2004
I have the one-CD "Electric Rodeo 2" and can't stop listening to it. Kernaghan is phenomenal as a singer and songwriter. His music is a breath of fresh air. You can't get any better!
In his voice, I hear a little Merle Haggard, a little John Anderson and a little Slim Dusty, yet a true original. I could kick myself for not getting every CD he's made since 1992 when I was in Australia. The USA should embrace his music and incredible talent -- he should be as big here in the US as he is down under.
Trying to find his CDs in the US is difficult at best. If you country radio types out there are looking for a rare talent, get Kernaghan's CDs and play them - often. As far as other Aussie stars who have had success in the US, like Keith Urban, Kernaghan blows him out the the water without any effort at all.
Even though there are a lot of references to Australia's outback, drovers, and strange-sounding town names, I can't say when I've been so excited about another country artist. His music has renewed my sprit. He is distinctive, poetic, sensitive to social issues in such songs as "In My Next Life", yet also does justice to honky-tonk songs like "Boys from Bathurst". "Spirit of the High Country" is a rousing song that is one of my favorites. In a wonderful duet with Catherine Britt, "Love Hurts" is just good country. She reminds me a little of Dolly Parton.
In some reviews, Kernagahn is compared as an Australian Garth Brooks but I think he's 100 times better. That's because Nashville country all sounds alike -- same studio musicians -- same licks, same sound. He's an original with a distinctive sound that epitomizes Lee Kernaghan.
I'm now looking high and wide for any way I can get a complete collection of his CDs and would like to see him in concert some day. It's tough when your new favorite country artist is on the other side of the world!
