Editorial Reviews

Product Description

At first glance the laconic, laid-back country songwriter Billy Joe Shaver and his guitar-slingin', supercharged blues-rocker son Eddy would seem to make an unlikely musical duo. But, like on 1996's high-powered Tramp on Your Street and 1998's acoustic and introspective Victory, the Shavers once again manage to meld their seemingly antithetical musical personalities in a manner that's raw, powerful, and utterly moving. Billy Joe, who wrote or cowrote 11 of the 12 cuts on Electric Shaver, is a sort of footloose, back-street Texas poet-pilgrim whose greatest original songs infuse the stark imagery of sun-baked losers and outlaws with homespun earnestness and spiritual yearning. While at times the elder Shaver tended to be an indifferent, occasionally off-key singer, Eddy has proved the perfect antidote to his dad's occasional vocal lethargy. On tunes such as the supercharged gospel shout "Try and Try Again," the Tex-Mex working-man's lament "Manual Labor," and even a somber spiritual ode called "Slave at the Feet of the Queen," Eddy's searing electric lead work gooses Billy Joe's vocals to new levels of expressiveness. --Bob Allen

5.0 out of 5 stars A close Shave July 13, 2001
By Bt
Format:Audio CD
Mr.Shaver seems to have gotten rowdier with age. Known as a Texas songwriter & country/ folk/roots icon, his last three releases with late son Eddie are his most all-out rock. Here he shines with some hard edged country rock that'll have you feeling somewhat more aggressive than usual. A dandy indeed!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best roots rock cd of 1999!! July 6, 1999
Format:Audio CD
Man does this album rock out!!!!!!!! From "Thunderbird" to "She Can Dance" this is pure Texas heaven. When Billy Joe does take it down a notch as on "I'll Be Here" you don't mind because this is the song you want to dance to with your bride. Billy Joe is in fine voice, the songs linger in the mind long afterwards. And, his son, Eddy, may be the best guitarist in Texas since SRV. Get yourself a copy and one for every friend you've got!

5.0 out of 5 stars This album has got to be higher than 1,986. May 15, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Anyone with the slightest interest in country, prog country, or rock n roll needs to purchase this album. No question, Billy Joe Shaver is "pure" country, but with son Eddie by his side on guitar, Billy Joe is "pure country" with an edge. Eddie Shaver, who adds musical diversity and raw energy to the Shaver team on "Victory" and "Unshaven", helps to kick start "Electric Shaver" into high gear from "Thunderbird" (the first track) on. In the liner notes a fella by the name of Kinky Friedman states that "Lyrically," Billy Joe Shaver "sounds like what Shakespeare might have written if he was alive today scribbling on a cocktail napkin at the Broken Spoke". Though the comparison might be drastic, Billy Joe Shaver is a legend, and he, certainly deserves better treatment than the 1,986 ranking on Amazon's album sales.

5.0 out of 5 stars SHAVER DOES IT AGAIN July 4, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Just brought the Electric Shaver album, love it. The elder Shaver may not have the best voice, but it fits the songs he sings. "Slave at the feet of the Queen" is classic country, or the way country should be. The younger Shavers guitar playing adds a pulse to the album that will get your toe tapping while the lyrics have you thinking.
