I bought this to study for the California license exam which is currently based on the 1999 Code. This book is based on the 2002 Code but the Code doesn't change that much. The big problem is that the answer key is not included. Evidently, if you buy directly from Mike Holt.com the key is included. I don't know why. But the 1999 prep guide, available from Amazon, does include the answers in the back.

In the introduction, on page ix, it says that the answers are available at his web site. This is not so. I do not know why the answer pamphlet is not included. Amazon and Mike will have to battle this one out.

Now the diagrams are in color but the pages are smaller. I would advise getting the 1999 edition.

There are no answers to any of the questions at the end of the chapters. And there are a lot of questions. For the student studying alone, there is no sense of reasurance or encouragement. No way to continually measure your progress.
The book has all the makings of a solid piece of work. The author's teaching style, the graphics and illustrations are all great, but if you don't have any way of checking yourself it can be frustrating. If there are answers in the book, I couldn't find them.

I got this to prep for my exam which is based on the 2002 NEC. I was suprised to find the answers to most of the questions were not in the book. This is a classroom study book. But I was able to contact the author's firm and they sent me a PDF with the 90 page answer key at no charge. The text does have a large number of diagrams and summary questions which are in a (I'm not going to say easy,as the subject matter is anything but) logical and orderly manner. The answers given in the key also give you specific NEC section numbers that provide the correct answers, so you can find out how the correct answer is derived- not just......WRONG! I would reccomend this to anyone studying for their exam but, I would also include several other study guides as well. I also use the Electrician's Exam Preparation Guide by Brickner which came with a nice CD that lets you take different tests, in random or chapter order, and timed tests that let you simulate actual circumstances. The study mode is nice too. I also use Miller's Illustrated Guide to the NEC.
Each one has a slighly different approach, and if you are studying on your own and not in a classroom, you need to have several reference books to have a fighting chance to pass. This book is one of those that should be on your short list.

Now I know why this book cost me a dollar, there's no answer key! Hellooo, McFly!! If I knew the answers I wouldn't need the book in the first place! This is unfortunate because the book is well written and illustrated, and I like Mike Holts style of explanation, but no answer key is unacceptable!
