5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to actually do your electrical project!, June 6, 2004
This review is from: Electrical Installation & Connections (Hometime "How-To Video Guide) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Dean Johnson (Home Improvement Expert and host of the PBS "Hometime" series) takes you though the steps for "Electrical Installation and Connections" in this "How-To" Videoguide. Like the entire Hometime series, you will get a complete description and total view of the techniques you need to do the job like a pro. From choosing the right tools, selecting the most cost effective materials, how to avoid expensive mistakes, and get your project done on time. It's reasonably entertaining - while demonstrating the details of the craft.

A nice touch is the handy on-screen index you can use to quickly locate the information you need. The steps illustrated are:

1. Basic Principles
2. Install boxes and running cable
3. Making the connections
4. Outlets, switches, lights, and GFCI's
5. Installing appliances
6. Connecting the service panel
7. Putting your new wiring into existing wiring
8. Understand 3 & 4-way switches

Be sure your copy includes the HOMETIME Electrical Project Guide. It's a great short-cut complete with checklists for Shopping; The Right Tools For the Job; Circuit Planning; Common Code Requirements; Rules and Practices for "Old" Work vs. "New" Work; Which kind of metal connection box to use when; even a Glossary. PLUS special sections with notes on: Wire types; Wiring diagrams for 3- and 4-way switches; Switch Loops; and a sample Project Kitchen Wiring Diagram. There's also a handy complete listing of all the Hometime titles available for the Do-It-Yourselfer who aspires to do a professional job of it.

Overall - it's an unusually well-done "how-to" piece with excellent visuals to demonstrate time proven principles - but with real time and money-saving tips from real pros.

Two thumbs up! the cool thing is that you can actually do the projects you want to with this!

I've shown this to my Electronics class before introducing students to housewiring techniques. It's a good intro, but not hold you on the edge of your seat exciting. The characters are good at what they do. I'd recommend this video to Vocational / Technology / Industrial Arts Teachers and to those attempting to tackle a home wiring project.
