Finding a working outlet on a gig can be a hassle. This will save you valuable time. Don't take a bar manager's word any more before you set up. (They are usually wrong.) Check it yourself, then find one that works. I should have bought one of these years ago. Life is easier now. I'm buying them for all my friends.

Agreed, these are great for people who set up gear in places with dodgy outlets.

BUT be aware: I dropped it and one light broke. If the red bulb breaks, it can't warn you of a problem, can it?

A better design would have a 2 color LED in each position - red bad, green good. Or just LEDs period, which aren't prone to breakage.

There are a few higher priced versions of this product, but they all do the exact same thing. If you need a tool like this, buy this one now. Including shipping, it will still be cheaper than driving to the closest store that sells them. I got mine and everything works great; it's a very solid tool.

The two units I received had a design flaw: Ground post is over-sized - will not fit in my outlet plugs.
- Also, the units I received did not match the photos. My units have one red and two yellow indicators (not three red). My units have a black GFI test button (none shown in photo).
- Packaging shows: "MANUFACTURED IN CHINA FOR PROSPERITY TOOL INC PLANT CITY FLORIDA USA". PTC-59215 RECEPTACLE TESTER. Based on price and other packaging/labeling issues, I'm guessing the units I received are Chinese copies of the real thing.

I agree, the quality of this item is not that high but considering the low cost - how can you complain. Mine works fine. It helped me diagnose a faulty circuit. Glad I made the purchase and saved a few bucks over the more expensive units that do the same thing.

Let me start by saying that his product does what is supposed to do. However I seriously doubt it will last very long, its construction quality is really poor. Mine came with a post I had to straighten out in order to plug it in and in the process the whole thing almost fell apart. The colored plastics that protect the light bulbs don't stay in place and as a matter of fact when it arrived, one of the plastic was already off and I don't think it was because of poor shipping and handling.

This tester is cheap for a good reason. The product does not have a ground fault button so consider this issue carefully before purchasing.
