Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 New titles added to a subject area already well covered should provide new information or perspectives to merit consideration. Vogt's contributions in this case are a more explicit discussion of the relationship between magnetism and electricity and a fuller explanation of how electricity works at the atomic level. Otherwise, the information he presentsthe discovery, development and use of electricityis covered just as well or better in Sam and Beryl Epstein's The First Book of Electricity (Watts, 1977) or Wires and Watts (Scribners, 1981) by Irwin Math. Vogt includes demonstrations rather than experiments throughout the text to illustrate; the objective and procedure for many are not explained carefully enough to be of real benefit to students. The Electricity Story (Arco, 1983) by George Leon is more successful at combining text and experiments in a way that expands and reinforces each. Vogt's book is illustrated with old prints, photographs and precise diagrams. The bibliography contains titles appropriate to this age; four of the seven are still in print. A useful acquisition for collections needing additional material. Allen Meyer, Vernon Area Public Library, Prairie View, Ill.
