Editorial Reviews

2008 four CD Proper box set containing 33 fine examples from the Jazz icon's early career from 1956-57 in studio and live settings, accompanied by, amongst others, Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, Art Blakey, and Kenny Burrell. Jimmy Smith was the first musician to make the Hammond organ effectively serve as a group, providing walking bass lines with his feet, chordal accompaniment in his left hand, and solo line in his right.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Proper" good deal, November 29, 2010
This review is from: Electrifyin' (Audio CD)
Proper UK , have assembled some cool rare early Blue Note tracks on here .. and for a great price .Jimmys version of "Billies Bounce" just moves along nicely to say the least , "Buns A Plenty" a longtime hard to find fave is on here , plus "The Duel" with just Art Blakey on drums ..A lot of these tracks were on the now unavailable Mosiac set .. ..everything Jimmy did at this period of his emergence , was low down swingin jazzy R&B based organ with some great all star help . a great place for newcomers to start digging Jimmy , and also good for collectors too .
