Product Description

The Memory Toy presents a pure analog delay for musicians who covet thick sound from a thin wallet. EH melds heritage with select components to present the musician with up to 550ms of delay. Not a toy but a professional tool that bathes your axe with organic depth and dimension. The selectable chorus is a lush bonus. No one does analog like EH!

Thats fun to mess with.

Compared to that pedal, I'd describe the Memory Toy as dirtier, thicker, more intense, and slightly lofi.

The chorus switch gives an interesting almost spacey detuned sound depending where the controls are set.

The good: Easy to use, nice features, sounds really sweet, and a great price. Well worth purchasing even though I have one note of concern.

The concern: My Memory Toy worked fine for a couple of months then spontaneously stopped working, lights came on but no effects processing occurred.

I contacted EHX and opened the pedal to remove the battery prior to shipping. The pedal has two circuit boards, with one attached to the other by eight pins fitted into sockets on the other board. I noticed that the top circuit board of the two in the pedal was loose, and had in fact separated from the main board.

Once I pushed the board pins back into the sockets on the main board the pedal started working again, it seems that the one board must easily come loose from the main board causing the problems.

I assume that the design that allows this to happen is the cause of the numerous similar issues I have heard of with this pedal, (some arriving DOA, etc.)

I added a rubber pad to keep the board in place from now on...

I'm one of those guys that is obsessed with delay sounds, and I've owned a bunch of different pedals from inexpensive to boutique. The Memory Toy, which falls in the inexpensive range, is one of my favorite. It's been reliable and has a unique tone that's become part of my sound.

Yes, the pedal pops when you turn it on, that's because it's a hardwire true bypass. Although I've found that it only pops loudly the first time I turn it on, so I hook everything up before a gig and before flipping the standby switch on my amp, I turn the pedal on and off once. After that I don't have any loud pops during the show. No idea why that works, it just does. There is also a slight boost in signal which might understandably upset some guys. I've learned to live with it, and actually like this aspect of the pedal.

The modulation is fairly intense, and if you turn the Blend up past 11 o'clock, might be too intense for most players. I consider the Carbon Copy's tone and modulation to be dark, subtle, and ethereal. Compared to that pedal, I'd describe the Memory Toy as dirtier, thicker, more intense, and slightly lofi. It will most definitely color your tone, even without modulation. But in some respect, ain't that the point of these little boxes?

My most common setting is to point the Delay and Feedback knobs up and out to their respective corners, and the Blend at about 9 o'clock (usually playing a Tele). This creates sort of a pad underneath my playing, not so much a rhythmic Edge style repeat. You can also turn the Feedback down and get a nice slapback echo which, combined with the little boost of the pedal, works nicely for leads (see, you can use the boost to your advantage). Speed up the Delay just right and you can achieve a chorus-like effect.

This pedal isn't for everyone, but if you're into analog tone and want a delay that adds some color to your tone, you should give this one a try.

Just arrived today so I had a time after work to test it. Works perfectly with silent switching. Even worked with no noise whatsoever with my power supply which is a little noisy with my other pedals. Controls are pretty simple to dial in a good useable sound easily. The chorus switch gives an interesting almost spacey detuned sound depending where the controls are set. I think I like it with all controls around 10 oclock for a good starting position.

A good unit to have some fun with. I use mine for bass, and it works great. It is a little finicky as far as getting it set up. I ended up with something that was kind of a reverb with a slight delay kind of effect. I haven't played around with the mod switch all too much as of yet. I have had a couple people tell me that what I'm doing with this can't be done with other pedals that they've used. Worth trying out if nothing else. I've happy with mine.

This pedal is great. It has a slightly dark tone, but not too overpowering. I love how it sounds. Easy to use and dial in the type of delay you need. It can also do the UFO type sound by cranking the feedback. Thats fun to mess with. I have a BK Tube Driver sitting just before it, and if I dial them in just right, it gives me a pretty sweet sounding violin tone. Anyways its a fine sounding pedal that can take a beating.

For the record I didn't buy my EH Memory Toys through Amazon but I have had bad experiences with 2 of them now so felt I should speak my mind
1st one was a gift from my fiancée she bought it used at a small guitar shop, when I got it home and it was all kinds of dysfunctional, the light would come on but nothing would happen or it would instantly go into runaway with out ever playing a note and would not stop till I unplugged it, also it would make this loud POP! when ever you hit the switch.
We took it back the next day, my loving fiancée then went to guitar center and bought a brand new one, which worked well for a few weeks then it started in with the BS, sometimes it has this whiny feedback with the repeats and other times it will only repeat slightly distorted tones ,as if it's not getting a good signal. And on a few rare occasions I've had the same problem of runaway repeats not stoping until I unplugged it
I've read sum of the other reviews that praise this pedal and it makes me think that Electro Harmonix must have very poor quality control, I mean seriously 2 pf the same pedals from different shops, one new one used and both are crap. I will definitely think twice before I ever buy any of there products again
