Editorial Reviews

Electro - Jarocho is a trans-border collaboration between the new wave of traditional Son Jarocho musicians and a group of Latino, U.S. based musicians who have taken on this style as a part of their musical identity. Son Jarocho was born in Veracruz, as a musical bridge between the Spanish, African, and Indigenous cultures that evolved out of the colonial Mexican society. While the early Africans in Mexico left few artifacts of their presence, their musical concepts are strongly felt in the isthmus of Veracruz in the polyrhythms, call and response and syncopated beats that characterize Son Jarocho. Electro - Jarocho is a project that incorporates the ideas and concepts of traditional musicians with the electronic palette that Sistema Bomb producers Hector 'Hecdog' Pérez and Greg Landau have created. Hector 'Hecdog' Pérez is a San Francisco based composer and producer who has studied Son Jarocho for years and has strived to incorporate these important musical elements into his electronic soundscape, a trans-border statement that celebrates the Mexican roots through a dance hall friendly concept of electronic creation. The collaborators include Los Cojolites, Patricio Hidalgo of Chuchumbé and Proyecto Afrojarocho, Ramon Gutierrez of Son de Madera, Liche Oseguera of Relicario and Chuchumbé, Andres Flores, Roco of Maldita Vecindad, Afro-Chilena Moyenei Valdez of Sonider Meztizo, and Asdru Sierra from Ozomatli representing a unique pastiche of voices that have celebrated Son Jarocho in their own way.

This was such an incredible find. I had been looking for a great new Latin Alternative act, and I finally found it! (I'm a fan of Latin Alterantive acts like Ozomatli, El Gran Silencio, Maldita Vecindad, Cordero, Sergent Garcia, Lila Downs, and Pistolera.)

This album focuses on Son Jarocho (traditional folk music from Veracruz Mexico) backed with electronic beats while sometimes fusing songs with reggae and cumbia. The lyrics are sometimes socially conscious but never preach. There are several special guests on the album, including Ozomatli's Asdru Sierra on vocals. The end result is an incredible new and fun sound that injects some much needed life into the Latin Alternative genre. My favorite tracks are Cascabel and Capitan.
