Night Vision equipment was first developed for military use. From World War II through the mid 1950's, the use of image intensifiers was in its infancy, requiring an active illuminating source or spotlight to operate at night.
Today's advances offer an unprecedented range of night vision and thermal imaging devices used for a wide variety of purposes--military combat zones; law enforcement case work, government and cross border installations; surveillance and perimeter security for home owners, factory/shopping complexes, commercial, public and corporate installations; parking facilities; nighttime navigation for aircraft and boat pilots; driving in rugged terrain; fleet management and escort coordination; survival equipment for kidnap recovery or search and rescue teams; environmental surveys, wildlife tracking; aid for sportsmen and nighttime photographers.
The greater understanding the equipment operator has of the devices he is using, the better he will be able to accomplish his surveillance tasks. This book is perhaps the most comprehensive reference tool available on the subject. It will help the reader build a working knowledge of the technology, and provides stand-alone chapters to aid the reader no matter what his level of expertise. It will enable the user or technician to make intelligent decisions in terms of what equipment to use, what to look for, how to design, customize, or upgrade existing equipment.

"The American pioneers in electro-optical surveillance planted seeds that have been lovingly tended and nurtured by those who have followed in their footsteps. By in large, the world night vision industry has been dominated by American scientists, engineers and manufacturers; and there is no question that the US Military has been the world leader in its operational use. The American domination will continue into the foreseeable future. I base this statement on first-hand knowledge of the dedication and skills of those in industry and the government..."
