Book Description

Jewellery Handbooks October 1, 2004
Electroforming is a technique used by jewellery makers as well as ceramicists and glass artists. It allows the manufacture of delicate and/or irregular shapes that would be difficult to achieve by other means, as well as repetition pieces (using moulds), which can also be difficult to make. For jewellery, electroforming means that relatively lightweight and delicate shapes can still be made rigid and strong, and that fastenings, etc., can be attached to difficult or irregular shapes. It also allows intricate details to be faithfully reproduced (coating a spider's web in gold to make jewellery, for example).

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, April 2, 2008

This is an excellent updated text for the practical use of electroforming. Chemistry and complex interactions are explained using simple terminology. Advice for the setup and maintennance of bath and materials is quite thorough. If you are an artist looking to build and/or use electroforming, this is the book for you. If you are a metalsmith and educator this is a must-buy.

This book is something of a teaser! I have a strong interest in electroforming, but I didn't feel as satisfied with the information presented. It seemed a bit lacking, at least from the point of view of a beginner.

Two issues: I have little genuine chemistry background. If you need something step by step and are not a chemistry whiz, you're likely to have a hard time following things. The other issue is that the book is from the UK. All measures, etc are in metric, which isn't such a problem until your sorry un-chemist self is trying to muck through both technical talk AND unit conversions. Also, the [lovely] list of suppliers in the back of the book is, naturally, for UK/overseas businesses. I can't afford that shipping!

Overall, I don't take much issue with the information presented. It's interesting and helps you to understand the process and how much equipment can be required. Since I lack in solid chemistry and metric skills though, this is one of those books that I've read and put on the bookshelf. I don't find myself referring to it ever.

Anybody feel motivated to do a step by step US book on Electroforming? Maybe if I ever get the equipment together to try it, I'll write one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Neccesary text suffers from poor image, December 13, 2007

This review is from: Electroforming (Jewellery Handbooks) (Paperback)
Electroforming is an area that isn't represented well in jewelry/metalsmithing books. I was interested in this book because it was devoted to the subject, but the image quality is poor and it could use some more inspiring examples.
