Athens, Georgia band R.E.M. were one of the most influential bands in the formation of alternative rock and indie, and became one of the biggest rock groups in the world in the early 1990s. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not Nearly As Good As the Other Singles from New Adventures., March 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Electrolite / Wake-Up Bomb / Binky the Doormat (Audio CD)
Track Listing:

1. Electrolite 2. The Wake-Up Bomb (live) 3. Binky The Doormat (live) 4. King of Comedy (808 State Remix)

Ok, here's why I didn't like this single all that much. Of the 3 tracks other than the single track, 2 are just live songs taken from Roadmovie. I personally don't feel that live songs are a good enough reason to buy a single. They are very good live tracks, I just don't think they are worth it. So, I went on to track 4 hoping that it would make my purchase worthwhile. Uh... not really. The 808 State Remix of King of Comedy (which is originally available on Monster) is just strange. It is a weird throbbing electronic song that just doesn't feel right. Michael Stipe's voice just sounds WRONG with a drum machine and strange sounds darting in and out. I just don't like this remix.

This single just seems like they didn't have anything else to put on it as b-sides. It still gets 3 stars because the live tracks are good, but the remix is just... well... bad. Get the other 3 singles from New Adventures In Hi-Fi before this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth it for Electrolite, October 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Electrolite / Wake-Up Bomb / Binky the Doormat (Audio CD)
I have to admit that I never really listen to the rest of this disc, I bought it for Elecrolight, and can listen to it all night long. This song alone can capture the feelings of a broken heart. The lyrics wrap around Stipe's voice, entering that little spot that no-one ever wants to expose to anyone. It captues the feelins of his bigger hits like evrybody hurts, but yet can lull you to sleep. The rest of this disc may be bunk, but it's worth it for this song alone.

3.0 out of 5 stars for REM collectors, not for casual fans, March 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Electrolite / Wake-Up Bomb / Binky the Doormat (Audio CD)
This single is decent, but like the reviewer before me, I would have to agree that live tracks (especially ones taken directly from Roadmovie) are borderline as far as paying hard earned money for them. They are very good live tracks, however. The 808 state remix of King of Comedy is sort of a comedy itself. Its redeeming features lies in the fact that it is a good reflector of New Adventures (although this originally was a Monster track). If you're like me, you will ponder long and hard if it's worth getting this single, and then finally you will realize that you should just go ahead and buy it so you don't have to live with doubt.
