5.0 out of 5 stars A watched pot BOILS!, March 21, 2008
This review is from: Electrolux ICON Designer : E36IC75FSS 36 inch Drop-In Induction Cooktop
I've used standard electric, glass top electric, and gas cooktops. Electric cooking was always pretty miserable, so when I discovered that there was essentially no way to get a gas line into my new kitchen I was pretty disappointed. Induction seemed like it might be a good alternative, so we gave it a try, and WOW, we were not disappointed! The Icon makes my old gas cooktop seem like a ring of rocks with a log in it. First, it heats so fast it seems like space alien technology. A small pot of water will come to a rolling boil in less than 30 seconds. You can then take the boiling pot off the stove and the burner is cool enough that you can stick your hand on it. The burner will get quite hot after a while, from the pan's heat, but it never gets anywhere near as hot as a standard electric top. This doesn't just make it safer, but it also makes it much easier to clean. The top just wipes off usually, because stuff doesn't burn on. Also, since there isn't as much hot gas under the pan, it doesn't smoke up or heat up the kitchen as much. Since the pan is heated directly, the whole system has much less thermal inertia, so if you set a low heat you get that low heat instantly. This makes it great for low temperature stuff too. It can quickly and precisely do delicate cooking things, like melting chocolate. People worry a lot that this can only use certain types of pans. It worked fine with every pan we own except for two. We use mostly All Clad Stainless, and it works great. It is definitely worth the sacrifice of not being able to use some pan types.
I like the minimalist user interface and its clean and modern style. It has a master power switch with a timer, and power and strength settings for each burner, and that is all. Each burner has a power indicator that only shows up when it is on. Otherwise, it doesn't have any blinking 12:00 clock or other ugly UI clutter. On the downside, I have gotten cryptic error messages. If the surface gets wet (e.g. whenever I clean it) it goes into blinking error mode until it is dried off (I think this is for boil-over protection). Worse, on two occasions so far, it has shown an error and it got completely stuck until I turned off the power at the circuit breaker. This is a little glitch on an otherwise outstanding piece of equipment. We have had three months of fantastic cooking out it, and I can't help but to show off its amazing water boiling trick when friends visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny, December 9, 2008

When you really want gas for instant heating, but cannot get a gas line into a kitchen, this stove top is not a second best, it is the best. I completely agree with the first review, have had the hob for over a year and the only problem we have had is the error messages after cleaning when the hob is damp.
There is a design fault with the layout of the rings. The smaller rings are at the back and when you want to make a sauce in a smaller pan, it means stirring over the top of other pans, also the stainless trim between the knob panel and the rings tends to get scratch marks from the bigger pans when you move them about. Frying an egg is different if the pan is cold to start, as it cooks the food and not the pan, a frying pan doesn't get instantly hot.
Pots have not been a problem, I carried a small magnet to test pots and Ikea have had the best prices.
Even with the above, I would not think twice about replacing a hob with an Icon if having complete control of your cooking temperatures is important to you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Opposing view, January 23, 2012
This review is from: Electrolux ICON Designer : E36IC75FSS 36 inch Drop-In Induction Cooktop
We purchased this cook top three years ago - and the computer that runs the thing failed a year and a half ago. We replaced the computer board, but it failed again. It is poorly made - the electronics will fail and you will be on your own, facing very expensive repairs long before you would have expected with an appliance this pricey. Electrolux will not help you. Buyer beware.
