Book Description

ERA Report April 1992
The main theme chosen for the conference was that the most technically efficient and economic way of ensuring compliance with the CEC EMC Directive is to regard compatibility from the outset as an essential part of the design. The current regulatory position including the transition period was explained by speakers from DGIII of the Commission of the European Communities, the DTI and the EMCIT Agreement Group (European Testing of Electromagnetic Compatibility of Information Technology Products). The papers included: the European position, implementation of the EMC directive (89/336/EC) in the UK and EMCIT - experiences with EMC laboratory co-operation in the framework of ECITC - "European standards" covered; the latest position, harmonics - a supply authority view and the cost of conformity and finally, standards for telecommunications terminals - "Test methods and facilities" dealt with; a comparison of measuring methods and facilities, using GTEM cells for radiated EMC measurements and RF detection in telecom terminal equipment - "testing and modelling" discussed; VLF emissions from visual display units, the application of numerical modelling to EMC design and control and speeding up immunity measurements - "product and system design" studied; the cost-effective layout of microprocessor boards, design of interference-free apparatus for industrial process automation and the utilities industry, installation of integrated building management systems to achieve EMC, maintaining EMC in production and EMC and the Channel Tunnel. A supplementary paper covered an EMC case history. The conference had the support of the IEEE. A list of delegates and and exhibitor details are also included.
