5.0 out of 5 stars Big Time Football... college style..., December 5, 2006
By Super Dave (Ada, Oklahoma) - See all my reviews

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I have waited quite a while for a really good PSP football game to come out (I skipped Madden '06), and I think this game was worth the wait. I know that they still have not come out with a perfect football simulation, but for a video game, based on the sport of football, this meets all my expectations and then some.

Dynasty mode allows you play this years season and recruit and continue on for up to 10 years. Other games offer instant action. There is even a mascot game (which I will admit I have not tried) which seems to offer some somewhat hokey action...

The chief complaints of mine would be the ball spotting error (which if you haven't read by now EA will replace games suffering from this glitch) where the ball is spotted at the first point of defensive contact, not at the end point of forward progress. Also the safety and corners at times impede the progress of your receiver, which should be pass interference. Still, this later quibble of mine can easily be overcome by only passing to receivers who are a step or two ahead of the coverage. I suppose it is better to have to computer impede your receiver and have an incomplete pass than for them to intercept or batt it down when they are in excellent position to cover your receiver.

And, to counter my complaints, and others like it, you can adjust nearly everything about the way the game is played out on your screen. If you think that you cannot make any rushing yards, and the game is not fairly biased in the rushing department, you can literally adjust your "rushing success." You can adjust things like quarterback accuracy, penalty levels, etc. You can adjust them unfairly just on the player side, or give the same adjustments to the computer and yourself. You can handicap yourself if you decide it is too easy. There are even two difficulty levels if you need more customization.

You can customize the players names on your favorite team, although they are not in there already. Your favorite QB might be in there as QB #7, and if that is fine for you, you have no problem. But, you can customize your roster with the names of your favorite players, and somehow, the commentary will even recognize the names (at least some of the current season names) and call out your favorite players name when they make a big hit or a great run. You can even sub your wide receiver for your quarterback on the roster, if you want to pretend your starting QB got kicked off the team for NCAA violations. You can renumber your players too, if they changed numbers and their new number is available. You can even give random names to everyone else who is unnamed. Players will get names like "Crumpler" and "Bradshaw" which I find kinda funny.

Playbooks are amazing and in depth. I found some plays that look remarkably like actual plays I've seen run in this years games. They have 10 formations for each play set, and each team has their own offensive play sets, and there are five defensive play sets (3-4, 4-3, 3-3-5, mixed, and team specific)with a mix of ten different formations in each (although there are more than ten defensive formations). This an enormous volume of plays to scan through, and you sometimes find yourself, for the sake of time, sticking to one formation, since there are a huge number of plays in each formation.

Taking control of the action is a breeze, and you can have as much control as you desire, or leave a lot to automation. Commentation is amazing to me, and it really boosts the enjoyment. Slow motion enhances big plays, and allow for less need on the playback. You can always get past the replay if you don't want to see the opposing touchdown again and again too.

I love this game, and I even had one of the "bad" glitch disks. I debated on keeping it, since I don't want to quit. But, I hate not getting forward progress, because I like to run, and I hate to have to try a risky fourth down play and come up short. Overall, I love this game and can't quit playing it...it is awesome! Try it out, you wont regret it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware the rushing yardage bug!!!!, July 18, 2006
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
Don't get me wrong. The game is a lot of fun. I'm a big fan of college football and the NCAA Football franchise. However, there is a serious bug in the game that I cannot believe was overlooked by EA. In short, the computer subtracts about 5-6 yards from the end of every run.

For instance, I was playing against the computer and faced a 3rd and 2. I ran the ball up the middle and picked up about 8 yards. Or so I thought. Instead of showing a first down, it showed 4th and inches! Huh! And this was not an isolated incident. About every other rush this happened.

I sincerely hope EA fixes this error and replaces all the copies containing this bug (like they did with the Madden 06 bug). If this does not sound like a big issue to you or you never rush the ball anyway, then get the game. With the exception of this bug the game is great. But personally I would definitely not recommend purchasing this game until this bug is fixed. In fact, I wish I didn't buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT EXCEPT FOR THE RUSHING GLITCH.............(I GOT A FIXED COPY 5 STARS).., July 18, 2006
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Finally!!!!!!!! I got my dream game on the go!!!

First off: College football is my favorite sports title of all time! The rivalries, the trophies , etc. All I wanted when I bought my PSP was college football. And finally that day has come. I have been playing it non stop since yesterday at 8:00 A.M. and thankfully I am in love with my PSP again. (Of course there is GTA, Burnout, and Fight Night which are all excellent games I own). Anyways , lets go thru some issues here:

You can only fit so much data on a little UMD and I know they had to cut some corners which is fine. Gameplay is awesome, fun, and a lot like NCAA 03 that I still play on my PS2 (which has my boy Joey on the cover: GO DUCKS!!!!!). The rendering of our stadium (Autzen here in Eugene) is way way way off. Like I said they can only fit so much on this little disk, so I'm sure there are only a few stadiums in here that are the real deal but that's fine. I named all my Duck players (which took a while) and then had the CPU auto name all the other players so they had names and not just numbers. This is a pet peeve of mine so I had too have all the correct names for my Oregon Ducks so if felt more fun and authentic.

The controls took about an hour to get used to but I feel like a pro already. The "jump the snap" thing is cool and comes in handy if you time it right. And the graphics and replays are all excellent for the PSP. No complaints here. It's PS2 quality and that's what I look for with PSP games. So far this game is everything I wanted in a college football game on the go for the PSP.

***** THE RUSHING GLITCH ****************

Everybody is talking about the glitch when you rush. So far my copy DOES NOT HAVE THAT PROBLEM!! I played a whole game just rushing and I watched really close to the yards and it was accurate everytime!! I hope I bought a good copy!!! Talk about luck I guess. I will keep an eye on it though because there are just way to many complaints about this problem and I would think every copy would have it. I will revise this review if it comes up. I PRAY EA FIXES THIS PROBLEM because this is a really excellent game.

PROS:
1. college football on the go
2. PS2 quality

CONS:
1. THE RUSHING GLITCH !
2. Autzen Stadium isn't really IN THE GAME
3. Our new Oregon Uniforms for this season (the all black, all white and all yellow) isn't IN THE GAME
4. After killing Arizona 49 - 17 At the end of the game it showed Arizona celebrating like they won.
5. The Juke function isn't all it's cracked up to be.

EA's new slogan: IF IT'S IN THE GAME, IF WE CAN, OR WE DON'T GET TO LAZY,AND RUSH THE TITLE OUT WITHOUT TESTING IT FOR BUGS, THEN IT MIGHT BE IN THE GAME

************J VILLA SAID:- inability to kick/punt the ball because the snap button won't function during the kicking game

THAT'S BECAUSE YOU USE THE ANALOG STICK TO KICK!!

************************ REVISED 7/20/06 *********************

The rushing glitch is alive and well in my game. The computer was at 3rd and 1. They rushed for about 6 yards (dangit) and now it's 4th and 2 for the CPU!!! EA better have this fixed ASAP!!!!!!

Is it just me or has EA become a worthless tired company. They have so much money that they can buy the NFL franchise rights but they can't pay a computer/video game nerd to sit in the basement and test these games!!!!!!! This game is REALLY REALLY good but this glitch is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!! I mean , if the Ducks uniforms were pink and purple, that's a cosmetic glitch, but when it involves the gameplay and pretty much the whole thing the game of football is built on (the running game) then that's way way unacceptable!!!

EA is on my YOU KNOW WHAT LIST now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anybody else with me on this?

***********UPDATE 10/17/06********************************
Sent my copy back to EA and within 6 days I had my new copy back!! It's AWESOME!!! The rushing glitch is fixed, and I also noticed another glitch is fixed. On my old copy when you win a game at the end you see the losing team celebrating like they won. That is now fixed also. The losing team actually looks like the Oklahoma Sooners, pOUting and shaking there heads at the end of the game because they lost! Good job EA and thanks for the $15.00 coupon towards another EA title, thats awesome!
