5.0 out of 5 stars Scrabble Has Been Fixed! December 19, 2011
Format:App|Amazon Verified Purchase
Let me start by saying that I love Scrabble! When I got my Kindle Fire, I was excited to download this app. After reading previous reviews, I did not purchase Scrabble because I felt it was useless without single player mode. Luckily, that he recently been fixed! For those who already purchased the app, you can update it to receive single player mode. For those who were on the fence due to the negative reviews, feel free to now download it. The single player mode works flawlessly. You can choose a difficulty setting for your AI player(s) (you can have up to 3). When you're actually playing, it's easy to control. You choose your letter and play it on the board. It automatically zooms in once you've placed the first letter down. You can also zoom by pinching, which is extremely useful. The nice thing about single player mode is that you also don't have to wait for your partner to think. It only takes a few seconds, so the match ends up going very quickly.

Overall, I LOVE this game, and (for right now) it's on sale! Snatch it up while you can. If you're a Scrabble fan, you won't regret it!

EDIT:

Apparently, sometime in early August 2012 the single player mode disappeared but it has returned with the newest update? Strange to remove something like single-player mode. At least it's back now.

This was my favorite game on my Kindle Fire. Until tonight, when I find that the single-player mode is gone! What a complete and total rip-off. Do they want me to buy something else now? Why couldn't you just leave it alone?

I already paid for the previous version. I want that version back. You are stealing from me!

I will never buy anything with Hasbro's name on it again.

EDITED ON SEPTEMBER 1st:

The single-player mode is back. You need to reinstall the app on your Kindle.

1. Hold your finger on the Scrabble icon to get the context menu and choose Remove from Device
2. Uninstall the app.
3. Choose the icon again and reinstall the app. Single-player mode is back.

I'm happy to be able to play in single-player mode again, but how soon before this happens again? There doesn't appear to be a way to prevent this app from changing (unlike on your computer where you can usually set 'updates = off'. Will Hasbro do it again? And, for that matter, can Amazon do that to the books I have bought?

1.0 out of 5 stars Love the game! Hugely disappointed in the app! July 25, 2012
By JC
Format:App
Great to play with friends or random players, that is if you can get it to open. It will force close multiple time and most of the time does not load, just spins and spins. I find about the only way I can get in is to add another game or go to completed games, view a few and then go back via main menu and it MIGHT load current games. Huge pain! And this is NOT a free app. The free app I have on my smartphone has the same problem, but at least I didn't pay for it! I might be wrong, but it seems all the stupid & excessive advertising has something to do with the free app closing and not loading - but there should be NO excuse for the paid app to be so glitchy! How do I ask for my money back? (Don't like to be harsh, but I see why WWF's has so many followers. I have never had a problem with that FREE app! Still hate all the advertising, but hey, it's fun and free!) I do have to add that I do prefer Scrabble, because I love the teacher function and the individual play option. Come on Scrabble developers - fix this app!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scrabble for the Fire NOW has SINGLE-PLAYER MODE!! December 17, 2011
By Q
Format:App
At last! The single-player mode (against the computer) was finally passed down to owners a day or so ago. This was the only complaint I had about it ... now it fully deserves 5 stars!

The graphics on it are beautiful and the ability to zoom into a section of the board is great. Honestly, it looks a lot nicer than the Hasbro Scrabble game on my PC.

There is a full dictionary and the ability to play others online if you wish, though I found it hard due to differing free schedules.

The AI can be played at three levels (easy, normal & hard) and the default dictionary, amazingly can be set to either the US Scrabble standard OSPD (Official Scrabble Players Dictionary published by Merriam-Webster) or the British standard TWL (Official Tournament and Club Word List) which is a lot larger dictionary with words not even allowed in US games! I wish my PC's version let me switch between dictionaries.

Now we'll likely see a lot of US Fire owners complaining about the Scrabble game cheating by using words they never heard of. They probably won't know to check settings and switch the dictionary (in my settings, the British TWL was the default dictionary!)

Just a really beautiful game on the Fire now. Thanks, EA, for getting this working so well for us!

4.0 out of 5 stars Scrabble the way I like it
The single player option is great. I like this updated version. Only problem is that it sometimes freezes, and the only way out is to shut down my Kindle Fire.

Single-Player Mode Vanished
Bought the game on Aug. 28, 2012. Played single player several times. Turned on Kindle and now the single option is gone. I gather that there is no fix and my money is gone.

I agree. The new GUI is not as attractive as the older version and the Teacher is just downright obnoxious since I can't turn it off.
