It was amazing to read this book and find numerous mentions of "In this paper" and so on. The book covers some interesting titles but gives very little technical or business applications. The editing is of course horrible. After some research on the authors, it was intersting to find some of their students research papers resembling the text from the chapters...Shame on them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your receipt, July 18, 1999

This review is from: Electronic Commerce: Technical, Business, and Legal Issues (Hardcover)
I am half way through the book and I've decided to return it. Once you boil down the wordy sentences, there is not much real content left. No surprise that three of the four authors are academics and the fourth is a consultant.

I also couldn't swallow the numerous typos and editing mistakes. A typo or two is no big deal, but this was ridiculous. Whoever did the editing at Prentice Hall should be demoted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well-written, informative, and concise, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Electronic Commerce: Technical, Business, and Legal Issues (Hardcover)
I am enjoying reading this book. The authors have done an excellent job in bringing together three diverse areas that are all so important for electronic commerce. As electronic commerce is being adopted rapidly across industry sectors, government, and education, a deep understanding of the main issues of electronic commerce is a must and also something that many people are looking for.

This book is an excellent attempt at viewing electronic commerce in the light of its technological, business, and policy-oriented issues. I also enjoyed having a comprehensive reference of the literature in this field.

If you are looking for a particular aspect of electronic commerce, for example, web technology, you will probably find other books that have dedicated discussions on that topic. In fact there is no shortage of books that address specific technical aspects of electronic commerce. However, they might not provide you with a general understanding of the wholistic picture that this book provides. I look forward to seeing another edition of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the field, April 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Electronic Commerce: Technical, Business, and Legal Issues (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book. It is very well-written, concise, and yet it covers a wide range of topics. I liked the technical coverage of the related issues, particularly the coverage of data warehousing, multimedia, and workflow sections. The case studies are also very useful, something that I have not found in any other publications on Electronic Commerce. I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for either a comprehensive coverage or a quick look up of a specific aspect of Electronic Commerce.

5.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive, April 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Electronic Commerce: Technical, Business, and Legal Issues (Hardcover)
The book provides a comprehensive discussion of the area of Electronic Commerce. It is the first book written on Electronic Commerce that deals with the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. It also provides information for both practitioners as well as researchers. It is well-written, informative and has several case studies the helps in illustrating the concepts presented in the book. The references are also very helpful in researching for other related work in this area.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wait for the next edition ..., February 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Electronic Commerce: Technical, Business, and Legal Issues (Hardcover)
Never before have so many words been used to say so little ...

The majority of the text is a rehash of basic concepts and underlying assumptions that the authors state in their introductory paragraphs. The book contains few hard facts and only a few examples of E-Commerce in practice.

The intended audience is unclear. The authors state that the book is "primarily designed for a technical audience." Such may be the case for the fourth chapter which is largely technical terms flung about like jello at a cafeteria food fight. The rest of book lacks technical implications and is not specific enough for the business decision maker.

Most disturbing is the uneven editing that the reader must suffer through. Some sections read like "Newsweek" while others are so heavily peppered with endnotes that the text resembles a particle physics research paper. One paragraph even starts with "In this paper ..."

If you are interested in researching the authors' viewpoints on Electronic Commerce, perhaps consider accessing articles that they have published in technical journals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book with fundamental EC background information, December 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Electronic Commerce: Technical, Business, and Legal Issues (Hardcover)
The authors of this book do a fantastic job laying out and illustrating the essential components of electronic commerce (EC) systems. The best thing about this book is not the depth of anyone EC component, rather the total coverage of all EC components and issues. It was nice to finally see an EC book that covers technical components and the softer business related issues which are often difficult to quantify.

2.0 out of 5 stars For students, there are better books to buy, October 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Electronic Commerce: Technical, Business, and Legal Issues (Hardcover)
This book isn't very good for me. It lacks detailed descriptions. How things are really accomplished in reality is not mentioned. I also missed a technical overview of all e-payment systems, e-security systems. I am interested in HOW these things really work and i couldn't find it here. The book certainly contains useful information, but it's not technical, and you can get that kind of information anywhere, without paying that much.
