As the Internet continues to transform commerce, the method of payment is critical to conducting business across the network. This work offers a survey of the major electronic payment systems available, from a technical user perspective. Requiring a basic familiarity with computing and networking, the book covers various Internet payment systems including E-cash, SET (secure electronic transactions), FSTC electronic check project, and Millicent. It also identifies the properties unique to various systems, provides a working knowledge of the necessary cryptography, and explains the protocols involved.

About the Author
Donal O'Mahony is a lecturer in computer science at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and the head of a research group specializing in networking, telecommunications, and data security. He also has consulted extensively for private industry and government. Dr. O'Mahony holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Trinity College. Michael Peirce is a graduate research student at Trinity College where he is completing work for his M.S. in computer science. Hitesh Tewari holds an M.A. in computer science from Trinity College and is a research assistant at the college.

To the point,

For those who are seeking the alternative topologies in Electronic Payment systems this book is a very good starting point with some very good references as well. Gives a good insight on the mechanisms as well. One downside is that too much emphasis is put on maths for security related subject compared to the general aim and tone of the book.

The only missing dimension in the book is the strategic/business aspects. The rest is brilliant. In particular, great description of the emerging payment mechanisms (ecash, digicash, cybercash, millicent...)

This book is from 2001 so it is definitely not up-to-date. In one table, it compares 25 different companies that offer payment options on the web but only 4 or so are even around. So I'd be wary about paying $88 for information that may not be too trustworthy. Seems geared more towards academics than professionals.
