Point & shoot = awesome, March 21, 2009
This review is from: Electronic Specialties 332 Pro Laser No-Contact Photo Tachometer (Misc.)
This product is really great. My greatest concern when buying it was having to buy the reflective tape for it. Rest assured, they give you about 6 strips 10" or so. And the amazing thing is the thumb size piece you need to get a reading stays on the crank pulley with ease! I thought sure it would have to be replaced every time whether from dirt or being knocked off by wind but no, it's small enough to just ride along. I changed the piece recently after it was on for about 4 months and probably didn't even need to it was hardly dirty and still reflecting fine.
Now as to the function of it, there's no question it's accurate just as they claim. And it's easy to use, you just point the laser and wait for the reading. Oh and the absolute coolest is the light at night, mechanics love this, without a light you can read it in the dark!

laser tachometer, August 9, 2010
This review is from: Electronic Specialties 332 Pro Laser No-Contact Photo Tachometer (Misc.)
good instrument.
poor instructions.
read-out confusing.
worked well after i finally figured out:
1. the magic simbol is the red LIGHT PATCH on the rotating object
NOT the display on the screen!
2. instrument MUST be placed very close to tape on the rotating shaft. I suggest 4" - 8".
24" - 36" - 60" WILL NOT WORK! (even if the magic symbol is clearly seen)
there is nothing wrong with this instrument.
there is a great deal wrong with the instructions.
as always, instructions are written by LAWERS and SALESMEN..............
NOT mechanics

Oh, Yeah -- We Forgot to Mention The Tape..., October 10, 2009
This review is from: Electronic Specialties 332 Pro Laser No-Contact Photo Tachometer (Misc.)
This reviewer admits to having been innocent of the fact that the unit will not provide a reliable measurement until a piece of special reflective tape is stuck to whatever's being measured. Without the tape, the unit will sometimes lock on and read, but most often it will not. Yes, they give you some strips of the stuff. I wonder if all laser tachometers are similarly inconvenient, or just the one I happened to pick. If this is a generic issue, I can forgive the vendor (and Amazon) for not mentioning it, but if it's not, I certainly would have preferred one that didn't need the surface "prepared" before measurement. This means, among other things, that whatever machine's rpm you're trying to measure must be stopped first and accessed -- a non-trivial consideration in many cases.
