I've been searching for a good, educational violin toy for a long time and am very happy with this one. This violin is very realistic, so from an educational standpoint provides a much better introduction rather than the hot pink varieties. The music only plays when the bow touches the strings. It also has a few demo songs that play without having to use the bow. The violin takes 2 AA batteries. When it first arrived, I thought it was too small, however, it is actually a perfect size for my toddler. The only drawback is that it is somewhat fragile, which is not ideal for toddler play. She has dropped it a few times and it still works - we just had to reset it. Overall, great toy!

I was surprised at how fun this violin was. It looks like a professional violin but would not last very long if a child did not handle it like a real one. I would suggest you purchase for a child who is VERY interested in playing the instrument and is learning how to care for a real violin in the future...as a toy it would not last very long. The only problem I had was putting in the batteries but once they were in, the violin was really fun to play with. The music is pre-recorded so no matter how the child plays it, the music comes out perfectly...not an annoying gift at all.

I bought this violin for my 5.5 year old, who desperately wanted a violin for Christmas. At first, we were very pleased with it ... since she doesn't really know how to play, it was nice that the violin played pre-recorded music when she used the bow on it. However, just a few days after Christmas, the strings had become pulled and bent so that the violin would play by itself constantly (it plays a note when metal touches metal, i.e., when the bow touches the strings or when a string touches another string). Granted my 3.5 year old son tried to strum it a few times, which may have been the cause of the strings' demise ... but I had kind of hoped that a child's toy would be durable enough to take less than totally delicate treatment. Apparently not. So, if you buy this, just be aware that it has to be treated very, very gently ... and if it does break, you will be listening to one electronic note endlessly until you take the batteries out.
