A hobbyist's circuit's book,
This review is from: Electronics For Dummies (Kindle Edition)
The Electronics for Dummy is essentially a hobbyist's circuit book. It teaches the basics... components, Ohm's Law, timers, filters, etc. But it really is written for the very beginner who wants to tinker around with a few circuits. Not terrible, just not really enough to do anything useful.

Clear and useful,
This review is from: Electronics For Dummies (Paperback)
I was surprised by how helpful I found this book. It presents the basic theory very clearly, and has what appear to be useful guidelines for those who want to get down and dirty with a few actual projects. (I'm not currently in that camp myself, having a more theoretical interest, but I still found those chapters interesting.)

The content is easy to follow, especially for someone who does not know much about electronics. It works for me.

This book really is good. if you really want to understand how the components work in an electronic circuit, I recommend this book. This book is not for the expert technicians because it cover's the really basic stuff like, resistors, diodes and so on.

I looked through this book as a physical copy on the bookstore shelf. It seemed a good mixture of theory and practical circuit building. Some of the diagrams are difficult to see on the kindle but I know enough electronics to infer what is going on. However I am annoyed that the book is not indexed. For a technical book this is a serious flaw.
The physical edition of this book has an index; I checked before buying the kindle copy (at a hefty price I may add!). Coupled to the silly, whimsical chapter titles that I've come to associate with "Dummies" books it makes it rather impractical to use this book as a reference on my workbench.I will have to read the entire book a length; bookmarking as I go, (who does that with tech books?).It seems the publisher didn't take too much effort to adapt this book for the kindle.

Not Up to the Usual Dummies Standard,
This review is from: Electronics For Dummies (Paperback)
This book is largely disappointing and its hard to say at what target audience it's aimed. Too complex to be of use to a hobbiest just getting started in electronics and too shallow for a pro, the book is probably useful for someone who wants a refresher course in the kind of electronics one learns in an intro college physics course. A fatal flaw is that AC electricity is taught simultaneously with DC. Within a few chapters, for example, the reader is being taught how to calculate capacitive reactance. Personally, I prefered being taught how to walk and then how to chew gum, as opposed to being taught how to walk and chew gum at the same time. It's much better to get a thorough grounding in DC before taking the jump to AC. The presentation isn't particularly user-friendly. The text reads more like a textbook than a traditional dummmies book. There are too few projects at the end to make it a good resource for circuit building. It isn't worth slogging through the book for the few useful analogies and practical tips the authors make available. To top it off, the jokes (a usual highlight of the Dummies series) are flat and the cartoons aren't funny. Hobbiests, budding inventors, or young people interested in getting started in electronics should begin with Forrest Mimms's "Getting Started in Electronics," a highly respected classic that concentrates on essentials and presents electronics in a highly accessible, pragmatic, and visual way.
