Product Description

Control provides infinite variable speed for shaded pole and PSC motors. Max amps means that the rated motor name plate amperage can not exceed this rating or you will damage the control and motor. Motor must be run with sufficient torque to prevent stalling - A motor not turning will burn up Motor must have fan blade installed on shaft (direct drive) to cool motor. Not to be used with gear motors. Controls that have been installed are not returnable

Installation was quick.

Now our gas fireplaces have speed controls that allow us to adjust from the wall, don't have to listen to the fan on high all the time!

If anyone is looking to replace fireplace fans with a variable speed control this setup worked great.

The control has a small adjustment screw on the side that you are supposed to tweak when you install. The screw allows you to set the lowest speed (which should not be so slow that the motor stalls). You can set a slow speed easily enough, but two problems crop up after installation:

1. The taper isn't smooth, meaning that (in may case, with a fireplace fan) there really isn't a "medium" speed. In other words, as you turn the control towards "low" the speed of the fan stays pretty much the same until you reach a certain point at which the speed drops to the previously mentioned lowest setting. Same deal in reverse, i.e., as you turn the dial toward "high," the fan runs slow until it jumps to full speed.

2. If you set the control low enough to be, well...low, then any additional draw put on the same circuit stalls the motor. In my case I turned on a light, so we aren't talking major draw. I tried changing the adjustment (putting more load on the circuit and then setting the "low" adjustment a bit higher), but I couldn't find a happy medium. If I set the adjustment high enough to not be bothered by a minor additional stress on the circuit, the "low" setting was almost the same as the "high" setting.

So, with these limitations, this speed control is effectively an on/off switch, something I could have purchased locally for less than a buck.

I bought this to slow down a ceiling fan and it worked perfectly. I wanted to run a 50 cfm ceiling fan in my basement all of the time to keep pet smells from entering the rest of the house but did not want 50 cfm of conditioned air being exhausted constantly. I also wanted the fan to make less noise. This switch worked perfectly, I did not even have to adjust the set screw. The fan speed seemed to vary with the switch position perfectly. I read a few unfavorable reviews and I can only speculate, but it might be that they did not purchase the correct amp rating for their motor. In my case, I bought the 2.5 amp model for my motor rated at 1.6 amps.

I have Hunter air cleaners to control dust from my parrots, and the motor speeds were much too fast even on low setting, and blew more dust than they collected. I purchased these units to slow down the motor speed, and was able to mount them inside the cases for a clean mount, with the wall plate and dial on the outside. These work perfectly for my application to lower the fan speed of my air cleaners, resulting in less noise and a lower CFM rate, while still filtering the air satisfactorily.

This device uses a triac type scr to control the speed of specific types of motors. Manufacturer's spec sheet lists shaded pole, permanent split capacitor, and universal (AC-DC) motors. This covers most small air moving systems. Since it's rated 2.5A maximum you'll want to also check that your motor's maximum current requirement falls below 2.5A @125VAC. I'm using it on a very low wattage universal motor drawing about 0.12A and it works perfectly. I didn't even need to adjust the trim pot for the low speed setting.

Knowing the type of motor and its current requirements is important if you want good speed control over the full range of settings. For instance, the small motor I mentioned above will NOT operated properly on the larger 15A maximum speed controls listed. With those controls the motor only runs when the control is getting near its maximum setting.

Here's the manufacturer's data sheet for those wanting more detail: [...]

These are rated 2.5 amp up to 25C/72F.... Mine worked fine for a week then melted, when I called KB customer support they told me of the low temperature rating and told me I would need a 5 amp model because the 2.5 amp one is only rated 2.5 amps up to 25C/72F.... Ugh, we keep the house 75 degrees in the winter it overheated.... By the way our fan motor is 1.5 Full Load Amps.

This is a great speed control, much better than the sunmile or whatever I bought before. I really like the small adjustment screw on it that allows me to bring the fan down to barely spinning. That is a great option that I've never seen before. My fan runs great and I can adjust it from high speed down to almost not spinning accurately which is something I haven't been able to do with some of my other fan controls.

The A/C unit in my condo blew air far too strongly, even on the lowest of the 3 fan speeds. It blew freezing air over people anytime the A/C was running and was quite uncomfortable. So I wired this in series with the low fan speed setting, and now I have perfect control over the fan and can get it as low as I want, and the A/C is much more comfortable. It is also much quieter. Problem solved!

My fan motor is a 2.0 amp, 1/8 HP, single phase 120 VAC. This control, good for up to 2.5 amps, works perfectly with my motor. Be sure to check your motor's rating and order the speed control with the correct amperage for it.
